Yay, first challenge photo of the summer :-D So glad I could find the time to do this. It took me some smooth negotions to get driven all the way out here, but in the end, we enjoyed the day out. Here's the background story of the lava fields, if you're interested.

"In 1990, volcanic eruptions entered their most destructive phase when flows flooded the village of Kalapana. Over 100 homes were destroyed in a 9-month period. Kalapana, a once lush, thriving beach side community, is now reduced to a barren landscape of black and gray, crumbling lava rock as far as the eye can see. Only now has life begun to replenish itself. Throughout the years, a few of the original residents moved back to their properties, and built houses. One is just a large metal container with a door and satelite dish. There are half sunken car skeletons being eaten by plant life, and newly planted palm trees. Only residents and property owners are allowed in, but that doesn't stop the tourists, that come occasionally to see the active lava flow. Entering Kalapana takes lots of driving over rough, rocky terrain. Getting to where the fresh flows enter the ocean takes hours of hiking as well, though we've made the trip a couple times."

Annah, this is just awesome! You really nailed this one! I was just there last year. I hiked out to check out the flow. It was pretty amazing. It was certainly sad to see the destruction left behind by the flows. It's amazing the force of nature.

Keep up your excellent work!

I love everything about this one. The sort-of blown-out sky, the dark but contrasty rocks, and the faint coloring on the girl. Her posture's perfect... The details are lovely. Perfect for the challenge.

I like the model's red hair and the contrast it provides against the predominant grayish color. Hope this does well...

Wow!! Really Love it! Amazing shot, and your model is amazing, she really makes the shot, along with her placing!!! The only thing i would have done is boost the contrast in the sky a little bit more, jsut a simple fix, but i'm sure you just overlooked it ;-) Love it!

A bit on the arty side - meaning not really gritty and dirty desolation. But it does fit the bill.

Only a few photos actually captured Desolation in my opinion and this is one of them. I really get the feeling that you were trying to express in this image. Out of all the hands to the face shots this one was actually believable. Great Job, cool location.

very nice. excellent landscape choice - lovely rocks! the colours are my favourite aspect, the muted shades / partial desatuation work well. personally i feel the head in hands posture of the girl is a little overused / cliched nowadays and takes away some of the creativeness of the picture. she could also just be playing hide and seek... that's my only negative criticism though - the rest of it (composition, light, depth of field, obvious effort, meeting challenge, overall sparkle) is well up there. 8.

Great desaturation without too much. Love the red hair. The curve of the rocks with the straight lines of her jeans really has nice juxtaposition. Bravissimo!
