I went back to my church and made a new set of photos of the wooden statue of Jesus for this challenge. I have photographed this statue before and I have been meaning to go back and make more based on what I learned on my first shoot. This statue is situated in the foyer of the church. It is relatively dark in this foyer but there is a sunlight dome directly above this statue. This dome allows a lot of nicely diffused sunlight to fall directly on top of the statue. This seems to create a lot of nice shadowing that highlights the texture of the wood carving. This photo is meant to be dark and it's gonna look pathetic on poorly calibrated monitors :(

Simple, but powerful. Great choice for b&w. The black bg is terrific, it really makes this a work of art.

Well, If you would like my interpetation of that specific verse taken completely out of context, I would suppose that it means that it is against God's word to create a statue (idol), or any other likeness for the purpose of worship. However, I don't interpret it this way when it's put in context of the ten commandments. I don't particularly care to discuss the ramifications of individual bits of scripture that are taken out of context. I prefer to evaluate them on a larger scale and in context with the overall teachings in conjunction with what I have been taught throughout my own life. :)

He is great - no doubt - but I wonder how you interpret the following scripture from Deuteronomy 5:8

"You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters below. 9 You shall not bow down to them or worship them;

PS If this is a sore point of something that you'd rather not discuss, simply do not reply. I'm not interested in stirring up animosity.
If, however, you're interested to discuss it - then I guess I'll be hearing from you!

Fabulous composition. The details of the wood are perfect. The shadows from several angles and the black drop background make this a stunning portrait.
Very simple and very tastefully done, right down to the border. 10

Neither subject nor manner of this statue (?) naturally appeal to me, personally. Nevertheless, I need to give credit for a well composed and excellent shot. Lighting and exposure, especially, are painstakingly and sensitively appropiate.

Very simple and effective. Nicely cropped and framed. Bit too much shadow in the eye socket for my taste, but only a minor flaw. You captured the textures and emotiveness well here. 8

I particularly like the play of light and shadow in this photo. It's one of those images where you can't decide if it is too dark or not, so I guess if I have to ask myself that, then it must be spot on. The contrasting is pleasing to my eyes, especially the darker shadows in the chiselled out areas compared to the lighter flatter areas. The pure black background brings our the contours of the face more prominently. This is very good work.

I like the lighting and detail except that I'm nNot sure about the shadow on the eye.

Incredible composition. Absolutely beautiful. Love the way you were able to capture all the chisel strokes on the head. Wow.

Excellent tonal balance and detail! Only down side: what is this statue a function/part of? I guess it's not really a necessity.

Perfect! 10 -danny
