I like the perspective on this one, and I like the girl in soft focus. What I didn't care for so much when I was voting, is that the title made me wonder what the brown stuff at the very front of the photo was... looks like something I don't even what to think about the horse eating (ok, maybe I have too fertile of an imagination). Greetings from the Critique Club!
This is unique and somehow you made something not interesting, interesting so good job there. The composition really kicks butt, IMO.
However, since the masses didn't agree I must now find lots of faults with this. :P Ok, you already know about the sky/background so skipping that I think having the girl in focus would have really helped a lot. Also, catching the horse's mouth open would have helped hammer home that this horse is indeed eating! I don't know why but voters I'm learning are like little children who need to be handheld every step of the way. I think you did a great job of that with your Take Two entry.
So in summary, have a better sky/background, girl in focus and some eating action and I think your score would have improved by a good margin.

First Impression: wonderful angle
Composition: very well balanced
Subject: good for the challenge
Technical: wonderful use of DOF, good focus, colors ok
Improvement: just the sky, a bit blowed out.
Summary: very nice idea and shot
