Okay... I wanted to do more here but I'm sick (101 tempurature right now :-( ). I saw a similar picture at a friends house and decided to recreate it. Lighter fluid and a match!

I burned through two jalapenos doing this (and burned the cutting board).

I'm not happy with the lighting. I need to get some better lights for these kinds of things.

I played with curves and such. Also did some spot healing to remove a blemish.

Resized and save to the web.

Salsa can definitely be hot and you are expressing it in a very powerful way. Great work!

Mmm, veggies are not a very "hot" subject...

Cool, er...hot idea.
I believe it would score higher if the photo was less cluttered.

A nice display, but the effect of heat is disperse (visually speaking) by the complex background. Simplicity in presentation is what speaks in the language of symbolism.

Agreed!
Great concept! However, the "punch" of the photo may have been better with fewer items in a supporting role. They appear to be doing what Kathy Najimy did in Sister Act, they are acting as a "Scene-Stealer." Of course, narrowing the DOF could also give subjective contrast sufficient to place them back into the true supportive role. Still as is this photo garners a 9 from me.

Great idea - would have worked better for me without the veg background, plain coloured backdrop would have scored higher

I like the idea. Would prefer a tighter crop. Vibrand colors.
