Gotta love the 24-105L. I use it now for 90% of my pictures. Not everybody here likes selective desat, but I don't mind it. I think it helps here by bringing the boy out of the jumbled background. I can think of 3 reasons why this scored a 5:
1) The lighting. Shooting at noon gave quite a harsh quality to the light. Note the leaves at two o'clock to the boy. Very harsh.
2) The background. Forest can get very jumbled and chaotic. It often becomes unappealing to the eye. I deal with this all the time in the NW, especially with fir trees.
3) Selective desat. Like I said, not everybody likes it and it probably costs you a bit. (not much)
4) Ok, one extra. DNMC. I tend to be fairly liberal, but I can see how the concept might not come across. If the description could have been posted as well, I bet it would have done better. |

Hey! I missed this one. Very nice capture and creative concept. As a parent I can kind of agree with one of the commenters that it's freaky, although artistic. Without a title this could fit in several categories, with the title you've tied it into this challenge just fine.
Compositionally, I think it's put together very well. The positioning of the boy in the bottom right thirds quad, and the trees forming a natural intersection, work quite well. By dropping the green and yellow you've really reduced how noisy/busy I'm sure this image was in full color.
Someone liked it enough to make it a favorite! ;^) |

Wonderful picture, but without the title I would have assumed success. |

I really like this picture a lot, I just don't see a lot of "failure" in it |

I like the selective desaturation, but he really gets lost in the busy background. I think a little closer composition would help a great deal. |

Neat picture. I love the lines and textures and the way the child seems so small next to those big trees. Well done. |

Based on your title, looks like you are trying to convey a kid going off into the wilderness. It doesn't really grab me as failure. I wouldn't call this a did not meet challenge, but more on the lines of you don't fully convey your objective.
Technically: the photo is pretty good. Nice use of color. |
