I went out last night hoping to nail Jupiter's "red junior" spot photographically. Using the 12" LX200 at the Yanna Research Station 25 miles S. of Madison, I shot over 1300 individual frames using my Coolpix 4500 and Scopetronix eyepiece. I didn't succeed in capturing Red, Jr. I can find it on the latter few of these images, but only because I know just where to look. It's much too subtle to stand out to the uninformed viewer. So I can say I didn't waste my time entirely, I assembled this composite. Each individual shot is a composite of 100 individual frames, stacked and averaged with Keith's Image Stacker software for OSX. Using the red spot (which IS easily visible), you can watch Jupiter rotate over the period of one hour.

Great job especially considering the use of a Coolpix through an eyepiece. The colors are a bit blue but the clarity is sharp.

An eye-opening image for me. I know so little about this aspect of science and photography. Thanks for the introduction.
