From CTP2:
To be honest, I didn't entirely 'get' this at first. It's hard to tell what the sliver thing surrounding the nine is, so it's not obvious that it is 'stitching'. Good play on words once I figured it out.
I like the composition of the clock, and the contrast of the red thread with the black and white clock, and the ligthing is dramatic.

From the CTP MkII
First Impression:
Clever, could be better. 5.
Composition:
5. The composition's okay, but could be better. Maybe a more skewed angle?
Subject:
6 or 7. Clever. Prolly more than most of the entries in this particular challenge.
Technical:
5. Lighting works. But could be better. I guess a better or brighter lit entry would've placed you higher.
Summary:
All in all, a great take on the entry. There's room for improvement, but doesn't it apply to all of us?;p
Edit: Coding.

From the CTP MkII
First Impression: wonderful idea, very good cliche selected.
Composition: I like it, you use quite properly the rule of thirds.
Subject: very nice clock. The thread is a bit too thick, IMO.
Technical: I like you have nore light in the nine, but I don't like the shadows, they are too intense for me. The upper side of the clock is a bit too black, without detail. The focus is good.
Improvement: use a softer light.
Summary: wonderful shot. Good job.

Hi! From CPT2
The lighting is a bott dark I think.
The colours are great and I like that you only have the quarter of the clock in the shot.
Well done, you did a great job:)
Edit: Added the CPT2

Hi Christian -
I scored this one pretty high, a 7. I think it suffered from being too dark for DPC tastes, and from the needle curving around the nine looking more like a scythe - I wouldn't have recognized it as a needle, to be honest, and the shadow blends with it so well that it makes that identification that much more difficult.
However, I definitely appreciate that this photo actually meets the challenge fully, as opposed to many high scoring images that only met it halfway. |

::Critique Club::
Subject::
"A Stitch in Time Saves Nine" was a clever idea for the Cliches and Sayings challenge. This was a very creative idea.
Technically::
The image itself is a very nice shot. I really do like the lighting, you have drawn direct attention to the subject we are supposed to be focusing on. You might have just stretched the lighting a little bit more so that the center spot was a little bit bigger. The clarity and focus appear strong. I would be curious to see the shot if you were able to make the stich line tight, at first glance I just thought it was a string before I read the title (during voting). I can understand that it was probably pretty hard to set a tight string without having a hand in the photo which might cause more shadows. You might even try something like the clear fishing wire, just a thought. I also like your cropping and placement of the subject, we as voters know exactly what the subject was.
Summary::
Overall this was a nice entry and very creative. I look forward to your future entries. |

Comment from a member of your own commenting club :-)
First impression
1. Good selection of a Cliché
2. The stitch is irregular
3. Good focus and contrast
4. Cropping is good using rule of thirds.
What could be better
1. I find the picture to dark and therefore added lighting would help.
2. IMO the stich could have been better looking but this is just IMO.
3. A frame to close the picture.

Greetings from your own critique club.
First Impression:
Clever although I must admit I couldn't figure it out until I read the title.
Composition:
It works. Nothing comes to mind as to how you could have cropped this better.
Subject:
Good. Also, meets the challenge pretty well although judging by some of the votes not everyone agreed.
Technical (Colour and light):
Good. The image is fairly clean and sharp. Tonal range is ok although could be better. For example, the hook blends too much with the clock frame. However, I tend to keep my monitor set a bit on the dark side so this is just a reminder that this is how it's seen with those on darker monitors. I know I have mine a tad dark however others don't and will vote unknowingly so you may want to factor that in with your editing.
Improvement:
The main thing holding this back IMO was not enough wow factor. Something needs to carry that either with the subject or technicals. Here the technicals are good and the theme/subject is good but neither is great. Make one of those better and you'll have more wow factor going for you.
Also, you hit the challenge theme but it might have been too complicated/difficult for some to see. Maybe choose a simpler, easier to see challenge theme in your entry. I made a similar mistake with my Something Old entry and paid for it dearly in the voting.
Summary:
Good image. Just be more mindful of what the typical habits are with the voters.
That's it. I hope this doesn't come off as harsh. It's just my opinion and suggestions. Good luck and I look forward to seeing more of your work!
Edit for clarity.

+2 point bonus from me because you ruined a clock to take the photo (at least, I think you did)
this shows a degree of commitment that deserves to be rewarded (lol) |

Interesting concept, but I think you could do better. For some reason I don't care for the light/shadow used. Perhaps a shot of the entire face of the clock with light more from the side to lengthen the shadow. |
