Christian persecution complex, anyone?
While the shot has some nice colours and details, the image as a whole does look contrived and "weak" for such powerful imagery.
Your reaction to critique reminds me of when I was moderating a poetry forum. Anyone that wrote anything in praise of their Lord (which ever one that might be, according to their culture), would assume that they were above critique due to the "holy" nature of their subject matter. But this is not the case, and many truly awful poems were written for and about God/s. Now this is far from a truly awful photograph - there is much to like about it, but also much that could have been done better. Makka's critique was spot-on, imho.
I would like to have seen this girl's pose and facial expressions look more laboured, more tortured; and some burning of the sky to make it more dramatic, like the God/s are angry. Something to give more drama to it all!
Sonifo, the photographer chose this subject matter, so it is the photographer's job to make it work. It's a pretty picture, but it is not a powerful one. Sorry if I come across as harsh, but I don't buy into the idea that if someone choses a religious theme, they are automatically exempt from anything other than high praise. |
hehehe..not loooking at your profile I would say you are new here? The flag and religious beliefs do knock a photo down. That quote that you quoted from me was a question to the guy who wrote the critique.
I believe a critique is to help someone get better not to tell them how YOU would take the picture. hmm..how to explain...
OK...forget it.. I guess I feel the critiques are more of one persons opinion rather than a good hardcore critique that she could actually learn from, but I could be wrong...I tend to be wrong quite a bit.
I am not a religious freak, but yes I am a Christian woman. :-))

Ok ya'll. I really like the shot! I do agree that with a different expression (more painful) that it might have made the picture place higher! But because it was for a dance shoot I wasn't thinking of DPCer's perspectives! I really liked the shot and after messing with it awhile I decided to enter it! Sometimes I don't make the right decisions on entering challenges. But like I said I liked the shot and wanted to see how it would place! I was disappointed that it didn't place higher but oh well! I do think people should have had more of an open mind when voting on a free study challenge...but I can't fix that so I am going to take what I get and learn from it! Thanks you all for the comments...good and bad! I am just happy to even be receiving comments especially after reading about how people aren't receiving much for comments in all the forums! |

Isn't that what a critique is? Tips or advice , which are only opinions, on how to make the shot better or more impacting? From what I see, that is exactly what was done.

Hmmm...interesting photo here. Reading through the comments you received it appears some people didn't like the theme you used, but as for myself being a very non-religious person I won't take any view on it here.
The main thing that I see looking at this photo is that she's not really popping out from the background. Her outfit and the rock formations kind of blend together to a certain degree. I've noticed in your comments that you used a little dodge and burn on the photo. In my opinion I would of liked to have seen a little more, especially on that awesome cloudy sky in the background and a little more on the rock formations (which by the way are really cool).
The focus seems pretty crisp and it's a nice balancing DOF that you've used. Maybe you could of tried the a slightly different crop so she wasn't so central or maybe shot from a slightly different angle? It's hard to say without having been there and seen what was around, plus, as you mentioned it was for a dance shoot.
Overall it's a nice photo. I'm not a big fan of the expression on her face though. Maybe a slightly different pose with the cross could of made this a lot more powerful?
Maybe some of these points may of helped your score a little, it's always hard to say because everyone has differing opinions. You've got some fantastic photos in your portfolio there so keep at it. I'm sure more ribbons will come your way!

Love this shot! Wow! It made me have goosebumps..maybe because I seen the dance and know the girl but Angela, this shot totally rocks and is the best (in my opinion) shot i have seen from you.
Keep up the good work! You will definitly go far with it as you do anything else! |

This just has a really fake feel to it. Maybe some more editing would make the scene have some sort of emotion or keep her from looking like shes just stuck there. |

The subject doesn't appeal to me at all, but I like the colour of the dress merging into the colours of the beautiful rocks/stones. |

this seems a little flat to me, its an interesting idea but it would have been better with the sun shining on her.Would have added a whole new dimension to it IMO. I think the left leg needs to be different too, it looks a little akward. |

Creative shot. Not sure that the model's facial expression fits, but still a great shot overall. Focus is crisp and colors very natural |

Not sure about this photo ... Is it a metaphor ? No visible signs on her face that it's hard for her (only the forced pose).
Sorry I don't understand it. |

Well exposed image in a unique setting. Feels a bit sacrilegious to me. |

I like the idea - a woman bearing the cross could be a nice stock-photo shot for an article about many things in our society. This should generate some thought on the parts of many DPC members. Look-out... I'm about to get critical :) ... As far as the photo being a photo (rather than simply an idea) ... The POV and lighting here are average. There is not much drama other than the idea itself. The background is distracting and I think I might have tried to lay on the ground and shoot it upward to a point were I might be able to clone out the trees. Assuming it is a reference to Jesus, I think she needs to show more suffering to be fair -- Perhaps looking away from the camera - maybe up to the heavens might make it appear more thoughtful (or you could argue that she is look at "us") but I'm speaking strictly from an interesting photo standpoint. In conclusion ... (sorry to be long-winded), the model is beautiful and the image is striking ... Just too bad the sun wasn't more dramatic and the composition and POV were a little stronger. 6 |

Very original idea. Love the concept and especially the setting with those rocks and the sense of altitude. |
