the original entry was from the 'office art' challenge by

inspzil //www.dpchallenge.com/image.php?IMAGE_ID=24102.

it was recreated for the original 'deja vu' challenge by

so i thought i would take the concept, and add my own twist. i also added a thrid office supply - elastic bands.

i did two shoots for this entry, and got quite a few interesting images. on the second shoot - i tried a different method of getting a liquid metal effect using glycerin. this is one from this effort.

i wanted to give the feeling the liquid was actually the paperclips melting - similar to many subjects in salvador dali's paintings, hence the title.

the set up was very similar to the original ( i think ). a paper clip was bent straight and fastened to a tripod arm so i could adjust the height and level it easily. i used colored elastics ( tried to paint them with light to show the colors but it didn't work ) to hang the paper clips from the straightened one. four highlighters were half colored black with a marker and arranged about 24" behind the paper clips with the black side facing the next highlighter. this was done to create black lines between the colors when seen in the dribbling liquid. there is a ton more detail in the full size version. once i had everything lined up i set up a 550ex aiming at the highlighters and shieled the paperclips from the flash with a cereal box. then i dribbled the glycerin onto the horizontal paperclip and fired away as fast as the flash could recharge.

shot in RAW.
edited all the way through in 16bit ;}

only PP was a mild crop - i had left some room around the edges intentionally. slight levels & curves - slight boost in saturation - and sharpened.

third times a charm...hope it is well received...

This always remains an enteresting image because of its voyage into the abstract. I simply love the colors! Bumping up.

Hmmm, baby oil, corn syrup or mercury? ;-) This is great, I will have to go find the original.
