The Cherokee National Forrest is located in Southeast Tennesse. The area I usually visit is just south and east of Etowah, Tennesse.
The Gee Creek wilderness is part of this forrest system.
I grew up around these parts and have fond memories camping in the area. Since getting more into photography over the last few years, I have started discovering the true beauty of the area.
This was about a 2 mile hike into the woods. The first part is pretty easy as it follows an old mining road. After it crosses the creek, it gets gradually tougher. Near these falls, there are many narrow rock ledges and steep inclines.
I think the trail goes farther, but after climbing about 35' to get around the rocks above these falls I decided to turn back as the terrain was getting tougher. I looked at a couple of ways to cross the creek to get some different angles, but after having fallen in a small creek the day before and being by myself, I decided to take what I had and turn back.
-- Post Edit Details --
Crop, slight color adjustment to fix an overall Cyan cast, small curves to adjust lightness and USM. Just small moves. I did use a ND filter and Circular Polarizer when shooting this shot. |

This is a nice shot with lovely silky water. The colors are beautiful I'd like to visit this place sometime. I wonder though if your kit lens inst holding you back a touch. The photo looks a bit soft and its almost a bit contrasty. A couple of the rocks almost seem to glow at me. I love the shot overall. |

In the year 1997-98, I did this composition:
I did this composition all by my mind, that is no photo reference was used. We were just chatting and I painted whatever image I had in my mind.
Now the best part is, the image that I had in my mind that time is very close to this photo of yours.
Interesting indeed. |

comment from my 1-4-0 thread...
Hi Jeff, what a wonderfull spot to find, a great shot and well worth the ramble! A couple of thoughts - It was said earlier the falls were a little central and I agree, also even though the top left has a nice diagonal I think that area detracts a little from the shot (but shows the surroundings well). I took the liberty of doing a quick crop (will pm you with the url as I never asked to do it). I'm wondering if closing down the aperture and boosting the ISO to keep the same shutter speed would have added a little more sharpness to the right hand rocks?
The foreground stones in the milky river set this shot off really well - a shot to be proud of :)

This image is fantastic. The silky smooth water are like tiny fingers holding the rocks. The foreground works well to balance the mpty areas to the left. |

I think the photo is GORGEOUS!. I agree that the rock in the forground gives it the perfect depth. I disagree that the highlights in the water are too bright. Anyone that has shot time exposure knows that the stong highlights are next to impossible to avoid. I agree that a model on the rock to the right would be the perfect topping one the cake. I would purchase that photo in a heartbeat. PS..if your willing to share editing details I'm all ears. |

The composition is very good. The rocks in the right foreground provide the depth perception needed since the left has only foliage. A beautiful shot of nature's landscaping. |

This is gorgeous! I like the depth that the different levels of terrain give this image. Nice rich color tones too. My only nit would be that the highlights in the water are a bit too bright/blown. Otherwise, I LOVE the silky feel to them - great mood you've established. Terrific shot. |

I think you need to compose this slightly differantly. Eliminate some of the right to make it less centered. I dont really find it distracting, maybe its just the fact I have been trained not to center anything. Add a little on the bottem to keep the white water in the photo(it will make a better print without white touching the sides). Its easy to compose to tight on running water because your not really seeing it as it will appear built up.(maybe that wasnt real clear) You may have over done the highlights just a little. If you had any models with you the rock on the right is begging for someone to sit on it. Believe it or not I really like this one, my favorite of the group.
Yes I know its easy to sit back and point stuff out after the fact. And yes I am this hard on my stuff as well. |
