A little different take on the 'In The Garden' theme here... A memorial garden... Not an ordinary way that most would view a 'garden' theme. I wasn't out shooting for this challenge, but this image seems to work for me.

There will be peace in the valley for me, some day...

Very well exposed and composed - not sure that I like the extremely shallow focus slice in this though, you've lost a bit of the front of the cross and the sliver of out of focus grass in the foreground is a touch jarring - maybe a stop or do wider to get the real subject all in focus while keeping the rest blurred would work better ?

The two white 'hot spots' (sky?) pull me away from the subject a bit too - try covering them with your hands - does it change how you view the picture ? I can see a 'pulling me upwards towards' heaven reason for them perhaps - but I find it better with those areas removed/ darkened - worth a play to see how it changes the picture.

Probably suffered from narrow views of 'garden' but seems right on topic to me...

Very strong shot. It stood out from the rest when I went through the thumbnails. Very shallow dof, but it works nicely. Is this a custom quadtone? I really think this would've done better in a different challenge which is unfortunate. It's definitely better than a most of the pictures above it. Giving it the title "memorial garden" would've probably helped.
Nice title too ;) I uploaded my snake pic two minutes before the deadline so I just put the first thing that came into my mind. Maybe I should just start leaving them blank because I rarely come up with anything good.

A really lovely photo - beautifully composed, great lighting and looks great in monochrome. However, in my opinion, it doesn't fit the Challenge (unless you do have a graveyard in your garden)

I like the picture a lot but when I view it, it doesn't say "garden" to me. It says a whole lot of things, but garden isn't one of them. The mechanics grab me. In a different challenge I'd give this an 8 or better.

Wonderful photograph, but I have to score it lower than I'd like because I don't see it as a garden photo. 8

Excellent black and white. Amazing contrast and the DOF is perfect. 10

This is an excellent B&W shot which I absolutely love! But it doesn't really fit the challenge. God, I'm telling myself I have to vote it down but it's hard because it's so cool. :D 6.

Great choice of b&w. Contrast and DOF are good too. I'm adding this to my favorites. 10

Although this does not fit my definition of what the challenge toppic is, I can see how it could fit into someone else's idea of what the topic is.

great lighting, good DOF, nice contrast between the rough softness of the grass and the rough hardness of the stones, the border is a tad big for my liking. The grass is really what makes this shot for me.

Wonderful "outside the box" photo. The lighting and contrast are wonderful ! DOF is perfect.

Nice shot. But is it really "in the garden"???
07/29/2003 09:09:05 PM
very beautiful picture... not exactly the best challenge for it perhaps though. might try putting the subject a little more off center
