 Thanks to everyone for the great constructive criticism and encouragement.

I almost didn't enter this challenge, because I couldn't come up with a way to easily stage The Pearly Gates. Originally, this was my entry for the Square Crop Challenge. It wasn't until I had it entered in the Square Crop Challenge, and I saw the thumbnail, it dawned on me (I saw the light!) that this was my Afterlife entry. It was shot about ten minutes later and twenty feet from my Square Crop entry.

This was shot right after one of our late winter storms, and there was a lot of kelp washed up on the beach. Since this was Basic Editing, I couldn't do much about it. I wanted to get across the feeling you get in some Oriental paintings of a man depicted in a rather stark and hard environment, and I think the rocks and the seaweed do that.

Thanks to everyone for my second highest finish!

What a nice image this is. Voted a long time back but just appeared out of the blue to say something. It certainly does have the feeling you mentioned above. The figure is a perfectly suited silhouette.

Stunning. I love the rocks, the sea - that's where I would be. The light mist really adds a strong sense of atmosphere. That is a really unexpected crop, yet the stasis it evokes is perfectly suited to both the mood and the title.

What a beautiful scene and you've captured it in such wonderful light- that mist on the water is beautiful. I love the silhouette of the seated man though he's rather too centred for the composition to be as strong as it might for me. I like the large area of negative space provided by the sky. Dark foreground is a bit messy... Great pic overall.

The orange hues....the neat image....could this be rikki?
