I wanted to combine the squares on the chess table with the challenge title. The setting and title is a play on this.

IMO, because it was a square crop contest, the dividing lines on chessboard could have been perpindicular/parallel to the crop, to me would give greater impact in this challenge

Not a very interesting image. The composition could be more dynamic and the lighting seems uneven. Good Luck.

I recognise this chess set! Hmmm... could be wrong tho! This is a little out of focus, and would benefit from an adjustment of brightness/contrast (-10/+20 would be my preference)

the flash is too harsh here and makes the colours look bland. A view from the top could have worked better here, and instead of just having the horse and king, you could "check mate" the whole thing by surounding the king with all the other pieces. That would have made the picture more interesting i think. Also, focus; not sharp enough

Hehe, I get it, Rikki. ;-) The chess board is made of squares...

The lighting really hurts this shot. The flash is a little to harsh, and the light from the window puts a blue tint that doesn't feel right.

Something abpit the image quality seems poor to me, like the focus is off or something. Maybe if this was shot at more of an angel with some shallow DOF.

This would score better with me if _either_ the squares on the board were lined up perpendicularly to the sides of the photo _or_ they were placed on a much steeper diagonal. As it stands, it simply looks a little sloppy. Also, a slightly lower angle would help give this more interest, and help isolate the pieces from the board.
