Not my normal shot but decided to try a self portrait to accentuate how life impacts our face.

Converted from RAW in RSP set at color temp of 4200, tint 9, shadow contrast +90, highlight contrast -43, adjust curves to tighten up histogram, de-saturate and save as TIFF. Used Noise Ninja set to D70, ISO 200 profile. Used DIP 10 to crop, adjust shadows and highlights, and add a little yellow back in. Used PSE 3 to resize, minor sharpen and save for web.

First Impressions: Hard life...but someone's gotta live it! That's essentially what comes to mind when I see this photo. There is a tiredness captured in the eyes, and yet they convey that tomorrow he'll be at work doing what he must do.

The photo is very emotional and yet the subject is rather unemotional in his poise. I

-------------------------------------------------------------

Composition: I like the composition and think it captures a depth of the individual, it is very emotive. I am not sure if I quite like the crop just below the lip.

Subject: The photo does seem to lack that "really grab" you feel, it needs something more to make it stand out from the rest of the crowd. It conveys emotion but lacks story. (Hoping that makes sense.)

Technical (Colour, focus, and light): Well executed with great detail. The nose is a bit soft and and there is a shiny reflection that becomes a small distracting element. Otherwise, the color tones, detail and lighting make for a well exectured capture. The photo has a dark shadowed feel but the main subject is presented with clarity.

-------------------------------------------------------------

To improve?: Try to bring something more to the subject. "Life's Impact" but what delivered that impact. Also consider cloining out/PS'ing some of those areas which the flash lit up that are over exposed (near the left ear, right cheek, etc.). This was probably a basic challenge entry hence no spot editing. Understandable.

Summary: Overall, a nicely executed photogra[j that just lacked a little "umpft" to really float it to the top.

Focus seems a little off, but otherwise nice.

I'm not sure why but I find it distracting that the nose appears to be a bit out of focus. Maybe controlling the DOF more would help?

I think that a tad deeper DOF could really help this one... the nose seems a tad soft to me. A fantastic effort!
