This is a hood ornament on the same old 1956 Cadillac that I photographed for my Country Life entry last week. I went back today (2/19/2006) to reshoot this for the duotone challenge. The sun was too bright for reasonable photography today, so I set my camera up on the tripod, used my remote, and held my ski jacket up behind the scene to shadow the subject. The bright day kept me from being able to see my LCD review after the shots, and I didn't check them before I left the site either. This photo had a hot spot in the upper right corner of the full frame that I had to crop out. I didn't want to crop it this tight, but I do not have time to go back and reshoot it before the challenge begins. I think there needs to be a little extra breathing room on the left and right, but I couldn't have that under basic editing rules. The little black spot on the forehead of the figure on the hood ornament is the reflection of my camera on the tripod. I could not remove that legally for this challenge either.
Post Processing:
I have a workflow for black and white post processing that I use regularly. I have written a tutorial on it here:
//www.setzler.net/bw
As of the time I posted this image, I was one step away from having it completed, but the basic process is in place if you would like to check it out.
I adjusted the levels, used curves to bring out the shadow detail, used the channel mixer to make the conversion to black and white, used curves again to add a very mild warm tone, and then applied a very minimal unsharp mask. I resized the image and then applied the border.

Would work brilliantly in a depth of field challenge, but not so well in the duotones. |
