I originally tried something inspired by Mark Laita's Giro helmet ads (they're quite fun - go see them) but it was akin to a third grader trying to do a Rembrandt with crayons. I learned a lot - to do a quality studio shot you need a studio, not a chair, a posterboard, and three desk lamps. So back to the drawing board... I was practicing with my tripod and my new remote control and the lamp looked like a willing subject (it doesn't move). I liked the picture. I considered that "famous" photographers have their pictures hung in galleries, hence the picture-in-picture idea. Finally, I LOVE jjbeguin's work, especially the duotoned/sepia shots so I attempted to create that tonal quality. I had considered titling it "Apologies to jjbeguin" but I wanted to acknowledge that Monsieur Beguin's work is extremely inspiring!

PP included my first DPC-entered attempt at spot editing (cloned out a prominent cat hair on the lamp), upping the shadow a bit in RAW (thanks SandyP!), USM, grayscale, duotone, save for web.

I like it, my mom likes it, and an online friend thinks it's "creepy".

I haven't commented on this? How could that be?

This is cool on so many levels - loved it when I saw it in the challenge, love it still!

The textures are just - hmm - it's like I can taste them! It's beyond being able to feel them, it's like an expereience - the repetition in the composition, the beautiful curves of the lamp base (not once but twice) - the texture in the lamp shade - how do you get texture in a lamp shade? Mine tend to just blow out!

Really it's kind of beyond my ability to express how this makes me feel - hopefully that gives you at least an idea of how cool I think this is.

I think it comes down to the magic of photography being so manifest here. It's a simple scene, could be any house (although it feels kind of retro so it calls upon memories I didn't know I had) but photography turns this simple scene into something that calls up all this emotion. Isn't that just magic?

Great work! To say the least -

The absolute simplicity of this image is the thing that strikes me the most. Clean and simple and jjbeguin will definitely see this as a lovely tribute to his great work and contributions to this group. Lovely duotones ;)
