First Impression - the most important one: Good angle/perspective on this shot and I like the B&W tones.

Composition: Composition is a good element in this photo. I like the lines that are created by the sheep and I especially like how only one sheep has his head to the camera. And it looks like he's staring right at you!

Subject: I like the subject for this shot, though I'm sure you probably took a few hits for it not being a person, as was stated in the challenge description. These animals make a neat study in texture, especially the texture of the one up front as compared to those farther back.

Technical (Colour, focus, and light): Again, I like the B&W tones in this photo...I think they work well here. The focus does seem to be a tad bit off. The interesting textures would be picked up more with a sharper focus. The lighting enhances the feel of this photo as well. The interplay of shadow and light, between the sheep and the spaces between them, comes off very well due to the lighting.

To grow its vote?: There are two things which likely affected voting on this photo. The first being that the challenge description specifically stated people....nuff said on that. My second guess would be that the description also mentioned using shallow DOF to create the Singled Out effect. In this photo the one sheep seems Singled Out due to the fact that it's the only one looking at you.

Summary: A very nice photo that I enjoyed! There were a couple of aspects that led to it not fitting certain challenge description areas, but it also has many good things going for it!

This is a nice image. It seems to me that the subject is isolated less due to minimal DOF and more by the fact that the viewer can't see the faces of the other sheep. This does isolate the subject from a crowd and I can see that minimal DOF was used but all the sheep could have been in focus and the main subject would still be isolated. I don't know which way to go on this because it doesn't seem like minimal DOF was the creative technique behind the photo. I do like the photo (although I feel like the main sheep's face could be a bit sharper). I'll give you the benefit of the doubt.

The challenge description was very specific about singling out a person.

Interesting choice. The slant toward left bottom s nevertheless unsetling

I really like this shot, the only thing that is bothing me is the soft focus. but very clever and well composed

The cow is not singled out by means of shallow DOF, but only because it raised its head, so I don't think that this shot fits into the contest very well. Otherwise a nice shot.

Not baaad at all, in my book.

Aside from the fact that you were supposed to single "a person" out, the photo could use a boost in contrast. In b&w photography...your blacks should be black and your whites should be white. Compositionally, this is a good photo. I like the different perspective given by the angle.

this goes with title

i really like this quirky composition. and b&w imo was a great choice. that extra ear popping up is just a bit distracting from the overall effect.

Interesting shot...a little soft, it seems, but that could be my monitor (or my eyes). I would like to see a bit more contrast, though...the tonal range is kinda close. As far as subject, framing, composition, and the slant, I like it all.

...single out a person in a crowd... Sorry, DNMC

I like this photo...Keep up the good work...should have a frame...but it is still great.

Sorry, does not meet challenge which says "single-out a person in a crowd".
01/16/2006 03:03:47 AM
great shot...could have been a bit sharper, but it meets the challenge topic well IMO

more like "i'm going to get slaughtered"

i don't really care that much, but i thought that would be a funny comment

Even in New Zealand I can't remember calling a sheep a person.
01/15/2006 08:38:28 PM
The challenge asked for a person to be singled out in a crowd. Even without the person, it's difficult to identify which sheep is the singled out one.
01/15/2006 08:24:39 PM
That is NOT a person
01/15/2006 08:02:30 PM
Very nice. I like the angle of the shot. I'd like to see the other sheep more blurred for the true narrow DOF.
