Greets from the Critique Club

Hi Anna,
This isn't a shot I rated highly.. The shot seems to be lacking in drama and there's not much for the viewer to identify with. The lighting is the main cause of this, it feels bland and is unflattering to his skin tones.

The composition is the strong point of the shot. It feels like he's stuck in a box. A bit of a tighter crop at the top and bottom would further enhanced this impression, plus would have given you a stronger diagonal..

If those couple things were changed, I think this shot would have scored much higher.

Good luck in the future challenges!

I find the lighting a bit harsh. And I don't particulary like the fact that the models hair blends in and disappears into the background. Still a nice effort. Best of luck in the challenge.

The shot has a very raw feel to me, which I think works for it.

a stark and disturbing image. I tried to dismiss it, but it has artistic merit. It may have had even more power as black and white.

Hey, you went with the switch! I like this a lot, or as least as much as I'll admit as a hetrosexual male :) My only gripe is that it looks like it's tinted a bit on the blue-ish side.

I like the composition. I really like the somber feel to the photograph. Was the harsh lighting intentional?

An interesting shot, but the skin tones don't seem too natural (you are not really purple, are you?). You could have fixed this quite easily (Image -> Adjust -> Variations).

Picturewise, this is not the most imaginative nude I have ever seen, and I fail to make contact with the model - the message gets lost somewhere along the way. Sorry.

Hi. I\'m writing a comment because you called the photo a Study of Male in Nude. I do not mean to be rude by the following comment: If this is a study, where IS the research? Why is it I feel you didn\'t push yourself in the exploration of this photo? What could improve greatly this photo would be a better use of the lighting. One lightsource, stronger, at a different angle, comes to mind. The use of B&W would also helpt this photo greatly; it would, for start, get rid of the reds in the skin color- which is also very pale and discolored. The basics of nude photography is to create a specific atmosphere through the use of the body forms and the use of lighting and colors. As it is, the photo looks more like a shot of a corpse than anything else. It is cold, lifeless, and close to being repulsive. I hope my comment will not discourage you. I understand that my wording can be on the heavy side. But I encourage you to try again, but this time, play with the lighting and convert your photos in black and white. Also, try to direct your model into an emotion. And finally, move your camera to different angle to force yourself to look at things froma different perspective. Good luck, and congrats on entering the challenge. 3

I think this would be an awesome shot if in black and white or some form of duotone, the skintone seems too red, and the whole shot seems stark because of it. I really like the post of your model, there is a lot of impact in his pose and expression. :)
