The other people are looking at a string quartet playing in the well below. As was this fellow, until he turned away fractionally before I hit the shutter. This is properly instinctive 'decisive moment' stuff - only the second time that I've had that strange feeling when taking a shot. Thanks for the appreciation, and for yet another 5th place. |

Glad to see this placed high in the challenge. I too was wondering what the women were involved in as it adds even more of a sense of story to the photo than the man alone. He looks slightly on-edge as if he has been caught lingering in some private moment that may perhaps be related to the scene around him. |

Are these women mourners or are they just looking at something on the street floor? Quality shot. |

Black and white treatment works well here. A shame that the hat cast a shadow on the forehead. |

Great shot.
The man in the foreground has a face with a story to tell.
And i'm left wondering what the three women behind him are up to.
Excellent image.

Good luck

Wonderful picture, the way the picture looks with the B&W and slight bit of grain makes it look like an old picture, Nicely done! |

I'm not crazy about how you met the challenge. It's easy to "single out" someone by simply having him be the closest to the camera. But you still meet the challenge with a beautiful photograph, so you get a 9. Talk about having your whole life etched into your face! |

Though the man here is singled-out perhaps more by the distance than minimal dof, this is a very nice image, and a great choice for B&W. (6) |

Nice portrait. I like this shot for everything except the composition. The eye enters the frame on the left, and then sees the main subject's face immediately, but then has nothing else of interest to see. Perhaps flipping it horizontally would produce a more appealing shot. |

Ok, this should be the winner. It is flat-out interesting. I love the dark tonality, but at the same time, you haven't lost anything with the dark. The man is singled out in many ways: he's the only one in focus, he's closest to the camera, he's not looking in the same direction as everyone else, he's the only one with a hat, etc, etc. I don't know enough about phototizery to be able to give you a better critique, so I'll wish you luck in the challenge instead. |

So many great B&Ws in this challenge! A lovely face full of a history of pleasure and pain. The women behind create a lovely diagonal helping to move the viewer's eye across the image. They almost look like they are at church kneeling at a pew! He looks as if they are looking for him and he's wondering which way to run:))10 |

Fantastic shot. I almost have to say though that the three women in back are so interesting, I'm looking in their direction too. To really single him out I've have gone a bit more shallow with the dof, but I'll give you a 9 anyway because the pic is really fantastic. |

My favorite! This is a great image; I love how he's isolated not only by the DOF, but also being (I think) the only man, and looking the other way. The choice of B&W feels perfect to me. |
