I like the composition of this shot, but it seems a bit overprocessed to me. I love the blues showing through the windows, but the sharpness/focus seems a bit out of whack. But, like I said, the composition and overall feel of the shot is great. :-)

Overall
Youâve made a shot suggesting the romance of an evening on the river, just 2 people in a luxurious setting. The lights, the reflections on the water, the buildingâs grandeur, all work together to create a marvellous environment. The border adds a picture-postcard feel, strengthening the concept of idealism, âwish you were hereâ mood. Clearly, youâve set out to meet the challenge well.

The elements of the scene, however, conflict with the weight of the elements in the photograph. What I mean by that is that those elements which are key to your purpose, the 2 in the boat for example, are far under-represented compared with the relatively unimportant but dominant building steeple. What are the key elements here? I have to think that the people are the main element, followed by the lights, then the trees, finally the building. But the buildingâs role is to suggest richness and splendour, not necessarily to be the dominant feature in this scene. At first glance, the photo is an architectural one of a building at night. The viewer has to search for the people before getting your point.

Composition
Youâve arranged the main lines roughly according the rule of threes, with the building occupying the middle division of the horizontal view and the spire, the left division of the vertical. The main weight, therefore is placed on the top left of the image, leaving a longer right-hand side line. Youâve titled the horizontal towards the right to emphasise this line further. Although Iâve no problem with the uneven horizontal, itâs a point magazine writers like to pick on.

Colour
Itâs a night scene, so the colour range is likely to be narrower than a day shot. However, there are some bright spots, most noticeably the one just above the boat and the brightly-lit tower itself. Otherwise, the main light source is the illumination on the building, which provides the golden colour cast. A range of colours is possible in these kinds of shots. Using the white-balance controls, you can alter the colour cast. You can expose for a longer period, but that would result in the objects becoming indistinct as the glow from the light sources would stretch over them. However, I feel that your choice of colour range is perfectly good for this scene. I donât like the blue in the spire, but that canât really be helped.

Technical
About sharpening, dof, grain or noise and other similar technical points, I only consider them when their abuse results in an inartistic effect. Here, your choices are all good. Maybe an iso of 100 would have helped slightly with the sharpening issue, but I donât really feel that thereâs a problem here.

My analysis
Actually, I feel that you fail in your objective of creating a nighttime boating scene. The people are far too insignificant to have a real import in the picture. It might have been better to use the building as a true backdrop, use a much lower camera angle, use the light above the boat for the silhouette backing, get more clarity in the trees and aim for a more mellow effect on the water. Above all, make the people a more important part of the scene. One final point, it would have been nice to have waited for the boat to have come directly under the light. That would have helped the silhouette a lot.

Best wishes,

Jim

I think this image is just underexposed. A 1/2 second shutter would not be enough. When examining the exif in a bunch of my night shots under similar lighting, a 4" shutter seemed to be the most commonly selected by the camera. My challenge shot was 4" and so was this one //umsis.miami.edu/~dwhitley/Moon%20over%20Miami.jpg
If you have "night mode" on your C720 I would recommend trying it.

I tried two different USMs on this. 100/1.6/1 and 300/.2/1 I dont remember which this is, but the other was worse. Any more sharpening and the water detail went white and looked 'oversharp' like my Bethel picture.

Just need a better cam. May come back when I get one.

Hey Matt, Nice work! I love the composition and the way the light in the photo moves our eye around the frame. It's almost like we're getting the boat's eye view of this scene, which is cool, because it is the romantic tourists' eye view and it makes the photo work.

A note on ElliotWhitley's comment below: I think this is true to some extent, and it applies to some of your other photos, too. With your camera, you ought to be able to get a fairly sharp image; what post processing are you using--and have you selected the best option for image size in camera? This is something I would figure out, as clarity seems to be all the rage here.

Keep up the good work!

David

Well, good shot of the building, but from the title i suspect the main subject of intent was the paddle boat, so its only appropriate that you zoom in more on the paddle boat, mabye take the shot from a lower area so you could have a closer look at the boat but at the same time keep the building in view.

thats the kind of shot I´d like to see centered ...

that is the tower of that building in the center of the frame
very cool idea though

I really like the border. A sharper image would be nice.

......Not really sure sharp is what I meant, but there's just some lack of clarity, maybe it's just blurry from the long exposure, and a little camera wobble? Not really sure what's up, maybe you could help me find the right word.

I kind of wish you didn't put the border on it. I feel as though it is almost cutting into the boat, which by the sound of the title you want to be the focus of the photo.
Great exposure on the building though.
