I did a shot of Beanie when she was just a pup using the same backdrop and boa - the contrast was appealing to me, but not to others. I decided to go ahead and shoot this again - she's much bigger now. It'll be interesting to see how this does with the DPCers.

::: Critique Club :::

Hi, my name is Kari and from the critique club.

The critique I am doing is for "Pretty in Pink"

First Impression - the most important one:
That poor pup ... torture for art .. hehehe ... nice concept and good use of colours.

Composition:
Not too bad .. I think that cropping Beanie more on the thirds so her eyes or mouth match the horizontal thirds may have added something, but I am unsure. I like the DOF .. it works with the green and some of the boa being out of the DOF.

Subject:
I do like the colours ... but do they enhance the subject .. or scare it of?. Nah really it is a good shot and meets the challenge well.

Technical (Colour and light):
Lighting good, reasonably sharp picture...

To grow its vote?:
This is really hard, I have not often seen peoples pets score really well outside a pets type challenge. I think that people are immediately "oh your pet" or "oh a dog" and mark it down on that ... I don't know why but that does seem to happen, I think it is tied to the oh a pet snapshot thing. But I have also seen this happen with peoples photos of children.

Summary:
I think this is a good picture, I like it and more over I think you like it ... and hey its you liking it counts!

If you've got any questions about this critique, please feel free to contact me via the PM system.

Cheers

Kari

Haha, very fun shot. Your subject (as unwillling as she looks) looks priceless! IMHO the lighting is a tad on the cool side. Maybe some WB correction or more natural lighting conditions may have helped?

Hmm.. I hadn't thought about offsetting the main subject from the color. Interesting. This little guy/gal doesn't look so happy about the setup though!
