Challenge: Best of 2005 (Advanced Editing IV*)
Camera: Canon EOS-350D Rebel XT
Location: Lanikai Beach, Kailua, Hawaii
Date: Jul 20, 2005

Date Uploaded: Jan 2, 2006

The sand is so fine and white on Lanikai Beach, that with a little bit of water you can compress it into sandballs, similar to snowballs. This is one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, with the sand, the color of the water, the gentle waves, the light, and the small islands offshore.

aside from the tilted horizon, a nice shot of lanikai beach. i wish i was there again!

I found that the last thing I looked at in this shot was the title part of the image. I really like the balance of sand, sea and sky. Perhaps a different crop may have made the tower more of a prominent focal point.

interesting pix, great movement, nice sillouette bg, excellent color, excellent texture, light nice, great of, b&w ok, nice lines, overall a very creative pix

Nice colors. I would have liked to seen it composed a little differently though.

Lovely shot... would have loved it to be more cropped on the tower.

The blue colors of the sea and sky are so clear and bright...I am a little disappointed, as the horizon isn't straight, dipping towards the right.

I know that beach. I think the house to the right used to belong to my Auntie Mona, right?

Cool balls! (that sounds wrong, but you know what I mean ;) ). I'm sure every commenter is going to tell you to straighten the horizon (not hard to do in Photoshop btw) so: me too :)
Nice sky, the people in the background is a bit disturbing for the shot, I think it might have been better without them (yeah right, like I would have asked them to move ;) ). Like the colours in this shot. All this imo, obviously. Good luck!

This is funny. Gotta try this. I love the subject, but the photo might have been cropped a bit more to the left and on top.

Very nice textures but the tower is too central and the object half in and half out of the frame at the left and the little person partly cut off by the right frame should roth have been cropped or cloned out, in my opinion.

Great Capture

Horizon looks tilted

what a fun photo! Makes you wonder what the sand balls are for. The color of the water is beautiful. Nice feeling of depth

funny, and pretty
01/19/2006 03:29:38 PM
...and now for something completely different. Good for you! Nice capture.

Horizon not being level is distracting. Nice elements, but could be cropped closer on left to get rid of something and a little closer to right to remove person who is almost out of picture.

10 from me...good luck!....heheheh sand balls.... :)

Interesting tower, but there's too much landscape.. this photo fights with itself. Is it a landscape, or is it a photo of sand sculptures?
01/18/2006 01:48:04 PM
Nice shot, the exposure is spot one. I'm glad you didn't use noise reduction, it doesn't really work with sand! two things I think would improve the shot: straighten the horizon and less sharpening
01/18/2006 11:38:40 AM
This is a nice shot with some great colour contrast between the sky & sand. I imagine you are getting lots of comments about the slant of the horizon with some commenters noticing that the slant was a trade off to have the tower straight. It's a difficult choice I'm sure, especially if you we on vacation & couldn't just go back to the spot & reshoot it. Ideally, that is what I would have done. Good luck!

this is a beautiful location but with the title as such i would have pefered that it be the main focus of this shot, there is too much going on in this shot if that is the subject
01/18/2006 05:36:12 AM
Thats the best tower of sand balls I've seen all day! lol :)
I really like the colour and tropical feeling I get from this shot, but I think the crop should be closer in to the sand balls :)

Very interesting subject. Might make for a stronger photo if you got in tight, and made the shot more about the sand balls. Attention is drawn away by all the swimmers and the water. The blue object on the left edge of frame seems to be a bit distracting. The sky is nice and dramatic, with great color. The island thingies in the distance are nice and interesting, neat how the sand pile is centered between them. The point of view here is kind of mundane though, seen from where anyone could just stand and look at the scene, often times when a photo shows an un-ordinary angle or view, something one wouldn't normally see, it can add a lot of interest to a photo. I'm thinking maybe if this were a vertical 'portrait' crop, shot from a lower point of view, keeping the tower centered and leading towards the islands, and still showing that great sky, it could be a much stronger presentation. I know that doesn't help much with this shot, (although you could still try a vertical crop if it sounds like an idea with potential to you), but maybe something to keep in mind in the future :-)

This picture has balls. I like that.
01/16/2006 01:34:36 PM
nice, horizon is a little crooked, rotate right. subject is a little central. nice sea color.
01/16/2006 06:54:47 AM
I would rate this photo a lot higher if it were just sand in the foreground instead of the sand balls. They distract from what is otherwise a beautiful picture.
01/16/2006 06:36:03 AM
I wish the tower wasn't centered, maybe crop off a little of the left side to pull it over. I love this picture though - a bit of playfulness works well. 7 good luck in the challenge!

I feel this would have been sensational if the sculpture were nice and big and in the lower left or right corner, with the landscape beyond that.
