Took this type of shot probably 20 times, couldn't figure out how to make it right...but I think the one I entered is the best.

Steps: constrast, cropped resized, levels, blur, dodging, and burning, and i think that's it!

The first thing that I see here is the candle light and its yellow and warm, nice exposed flame and you have chosen an apt title for the image too.

Looking at the details you provided, an aperture 25 was used, I would assume you wanted a deep dof to keep most of the things in focus, but the background at this moment is quiet soft. Were you too close to the candle ? Also write down the lens used as this may help.

You could have possibly used a bit more for the background. the left side at present is quiet dull and could use some lights in the background to balance the image.

if you have any questions, please feel free to pm me

The composition is not too bad but it misses clearness on the flame of the candle and this clearness would have given a better result on the fir tree.

A nice holiday spirit photo. Tones, lighting, and subject all all well captured. My one critique on strengthening the visual impact of the holiday spirit in the photo is that more of the christmas tree - as in the full trianglar shape could be present in the background. The candle would still be the main subject and should/can still retain the same size and porportion of the photo. By just moving the candle further away from the scene and composing the composition exactly as you did here more off and possibly the full tree would be visible in the background.

Flame, not candle front should be in focus.

This is very warm and inviting. Thinking of grabbing a cup of hot cocoa, turn on the Christmas music and sit by the tree.
