Shot in my kitchen in complete darkness, my goal was to show a detailed view of the ignition point of the candle, meeting the molten wax which was pooled below.

The purple cande gave me the best feel with its rich, deep color. Finding the right angle to give the best view of all these elements was a bit tricky, but I found the most impact by offsetting this view with darkness on the right.

I don't have a mirror lock, or at least I couldnt figure out where it was if I did, so this was the most detail I could get out of the wick without having probems from the vibration created by it.

To get the right look from the pool and the wax on the outer edge of the candle, a lot of work went into melting creatively with a lighter to get the right form of the subject before shooting.

As far as post-processing, I only used a healing brush to fix a couple of blemishes that were embedded in the wax below; they couldnt be seen in daylight being embedded, but the candlelight back-light produced a couple of ugly shadows in the base. Other than that, I touched nothing.

Thanks for your consideration and comments!

i would have liked to have seen a little more of the flame since you decided to make the candle your subject rather than using candlelight to create impact. The image would have been more interesting if you had allowed the candle to burn longer so there were some intriging waxdrip patterns down the candle.

I like how you've captured the wax sripping, but I wish the whole flame was in there.

I like the placement in this image probably the best, very nice having it over to the left like that and not feeling the need to show the entire flame. Nice choice. Good luck.

Great close up, although I'm not sure about the top of the flame being cropped off.

Lovely color! Crisp and sharp without the flame being over powering.

Beautiful photograph with a beautiful color in wax, but the flame is cut and spaces it on the right is too empty. It is a good imbalance.
