Challenge: City Life (Classic Editing)
Collection: Scenic
Camera: Sony DSC-S30

Canton, NC is not by any stretch a large city, but we do have all kinds of wildlife! This was a groundhog (aka whistlepig/woodchuck) my husband and I saw while walking in the rec park one evening. It ran in front of us on its way back to the river. These are common critters in our parts -- I have no less than 4 - 5 as neighbors. this picture is grainy because you really don't want ot get to close, they are considered rodents!

Pixelated look is because I had to crop it out of the larger version. You can only get so close to live groundhogs! (Sorry Zeissman, my camera is fine, my judgement was at fault this time.)

As far as meeting the challenge, I will be stubborn and continue to claim, that yes, this does represent city life, "relative to where I live." I am glad to live in a town where I can walk at night, and feel safe, and we don't even always have to lock our doors at Wal-Mart. :-) Fortunately, except for a few stray teenagers, and grownups acting foolish, this is about hte wildest life we have around here.

Hilarious. I can definitely relate. More focus needed. I'm guessing this was a night shot...hard to get good focus.

Very poor quality, seems blurred.

Challenge aspects aside, this is simply too grainy and also very dark. It actually looks like a capture from a video camera. Did you have to crop WAY in to another photo to give the rodent (don't know what kind it is) enough of a presence in the photo? If you crop too far, you lose quality and things start getting pixelated.

What is this, a badger?

Not sure if this is out of focus or just overly compressed. Check the forums for tips on controlling JPEG compression.

It would be better if it was in focus/better resolution. Still I'm not sure if this works for a subject of city life.

NOVA (PBS) has an episode about the various "wild" animals which live in cities...

Hard to catch wildlife, so I assume you had to crop in too tight afterwards which caused the digitization effect. Do you have digital zoom on your camera? Mine automatically cuts the file size down when I use it, but is actually the right size for the site requirements, and captures an image that's further away than what I can approach. As far as the subject matter for the challenge at hand, without the title, would not depict city life. Now, a trash can or a building, or a mailbox, or a ... something in it to show me it's in a city would help. :-)

Too funny! I love the wary expression!

Dark and a bit jaggy (overly blown up). A bit towards the edge of the Challenge, don't you think? (it's not even the cute type rodent, no cute points)
Photo 5 City 5 (bonus for what the heck +2) total 7

I'm sure it is taken in the city but this image does not convey that.

you may need a better camera, this is a bad picture.
06/26/2002 12:43:00 PM
A good idea. Photo would have been more effective fi it had less compression artifacts in it.

Sorry, but this is fuzzy. I know action shots take practice (I need it myself). So keep practicing!

nice capture! If the focus were a little tighter, I'd give this a 9 -- I love the position of the animal in the frame, and how it's looking out of the corner of it's eye.

Not very clear and kind of a stretch for the challenge
06/25/2002 04:20:00 PM
I guess animals are in the city too.

A bit of a stretch for the concept :) but thinking outside the box is suppose to be a 'good' thing. However, this came out a bit too dark and the focus wasn't as sharp as it could be.
