Critique Club Here...
Welcome to DPC. WHile the camera can make a difference, it is still the photographer that makes the image. And this is a nice image.
Had you had some latitude on editing, this could be much better (sky) but it is still quite nice.
Composition - you seem to have an idea about this, and it shows in the image as the other commenters have mention - the leading line of the fence rail toward the cooling towers. I might suggest a bit more be cropped off the left side and maybe lose some of the sky - it is boring and less of it would add to the impact of the cooling towers. Keep teh excaavater on the left. It would also emphasize the road a bit more, and a big dirty truck on the road would help the industrial feel too.
I am torn on the lighting - the foreground is a bit dark (easily fixed in PP with advanced rules...)and the building just below the cooling towers is definitely too bright. The dark and light overall has a certain balance though.
Technically it could be bit sharper and have better tones. There are so many ways to convert color to b&w, and the effects vary depending on the image. ALL digital images need some sharpening (usuall via USM) for web display. I think the older 1Mp cams need less, and i know the higher up you go the more is needed. This image could use some.
A good first entry with a minimal camera - enjoy DPC and glas to have you here.

Thanks to those who did comment. Wish I had been there an hour earlier... the lighting would have been better. The cooling towers are at the nuclear plant in Limerick, PA. I'm also reasonably confident that the old 1.5 megapixel Minolta Dimage will be replaced by Christmas. |

6 - Good perspective and 'view'. Criticism; without the cars, and those 'billowing smoke clouds' emphasized somehow, would have made this better in my opinion. |

great perspective, like the fence post as leading line to the smoke stack, good use of B&W and certainly meets the challenge - nice work :) |

I like the lines of the fence, but the image has a softness which doesn't work well. |
