Hey Brett
This is the CC paying you a visit.
Before i get into the image i have to say a HUGE thankyou to you for all the comments you have made in ratio to those you have recieved. Makes me embrassed to compare myself!
Growing Pains is a very apt title for this image. When we are young we dream of being older and being able to do whatever we want, and those growing pains sure do set in! The concept is good, i believe it popped into a lot of our heads whenthe challenge was annouced. I think it was scalvert that recently said when brainstorming for a challenge, he thinks of the obvious, and then wonders how to make it unique, and if other people would actually want to look at it. You had to share this concept with a number of other photogs in this challenge, which i believe affected your score - if you think this might be the case when you have an idea, Shannons advice to try and make a more unique take on an obvious concept.
I agree with the commentors that this image is a little two busy. However, everything here has a reason - tells part of the pains of adulthood, with the exception of the busniesscard holder/clock. The story would be as strong without these, and the image stronger.
Lighting needs a little work. It seems as though the lights might have been a little two low, and needed to shine down on the subject rather than shine beside it if that makes sense. The cup and the pills, near the light have tiny blow outs. The pen which is shielded from the light, is mostly lost in shadow. Sections on the bills also appear that with a little more light they would be crisper.
I ran across the same problem with the light not working on the calulator type screen in my own adult picture. I think what would have helped this would have been shooting the scene in a light tent to even out the light reflecting off the screen - but i am not sure. If you work it out, please share.
Overall, it is a good clean shot which it fit the challenge very well - but lacked the extra omph to take it beyond the mid fives. Don't be afraid to let your creativity run wild!
It you have any questions or would like to discuss the image further, please feel free to PM me.
Cheers
Elli

6 - Like this. A lot of context. Criticism; slightly different arrangement/composition (for more balance), better focus/sharpness on at least a few items, the lighting adjusted, would all have made this better in my opinion. |

i like the choice of perspective for this shot...looking straight down onto the still life. the lighting is washing out the calculator display, but i like it otherwise! |

I like this, I had a similar idea but this seems just a bit too cluttered for it to really work. I feel the clock and business card holder isn't needed along with the cup of coffee and the meds. I think it would have worked very well with the bills/mortage/pen and calculator in the photo. I like the neutral black background. A wooden grained table top will work as well. |
