Hey Jason, yes I do like this one. I gave it a 6 and here's why (mainly technical stuff), I like photos with shallow DOF, but for some reason the background on this seems just a bit too blurred. I like his look, it's very inviting (even with the makeup) :-) I might off-center him just a bit more if you're going to go with a horizontal format and I agree with MrsFuzzButt about cropping it so more of his hair was visible, as I think that's kind of important part of his look. Also, if this was my shot, I might sharpen his pupils a bit because as it is, his eyebrows & beard seem more in focus and it kind of distracts just a little. But that's just a personal preference for me, I really dig super sharp eyes. Overall, I think it's a nice portrait, you brought out his personality well and it should have scored higher than it did. But Free studies are always tough competitions. :-) |

Since you posted in the Free Study Scores Thread I thought I would run through and comment. :-) I gave you a 5. This is an average shot IMO. I would have liked to see more of his hair to complete the look. I don't agree with the flash comment in regards to the shadows. I just think it is just a little bright for the look he has going. Overall, he is a very photogenic person and I love the make-up. Of course, I like the whole Goth look to begin with. |

Interesting fellow. The use of on-camera flash really washes out the natural shadows from his face though. Try experimenting with natural lighting instead of using the flash. :) |

It has always amazed me that people who are particuarly photogenic can do just about anything to themselves and still look good in an image. This is a great example of that. He's a great smile and looks quite friendly. Wouldn't mind seeing him without all the hubris just for a comparison. Nice job. |

Nice clear image. The makeup is great - very theatrical. I like the DOF too. I might whiten the teeth just a smidge. The overall composition is good and he being ever so slightly off centered works for me. |
