Critique Club:
Hey, funny I should get this for the critique club after already corresponding with you about it. As you already know, I liked this shot alot. I also think you already know what's good and what's bad about your photo.
This shot is great in terms of tone and focus (in my opinion, obviously not everyones) but lacking in terms of composition and lighting, which were both out of your control. I think you did a nice job of minimizing the blown out highlights of the sun behind the trees. I didn't find it that distracting, but it would surely be better without them. I actually find the highlight on the horses nose (not sure what a horses nose is called :) interesting because I think it is a white marking, but I'm not sure. I think it is an interesting, even if unintended, effect of drawing the eye there.
All in all, it's a damn shame that the horses didn't want to cooperate and pose professionally for and that you can't jump over fences and move other people's horses. I think this is a beautiful photo and you should be very proud of how it came out given the circumstances. |

Beautiful photograph! I love photographing horses as well. Too bad that prickly looking bush is covering most of the horse. |

The blown out highlights in the upper portion of the picture and the "insect protector" on the horse distract from the picture in my opinion. Lots of potential with this subject matter though! |

i don't really think the soft focus in this picture does justice to it. the tones are nice, but i would like to see everything a bit sharper. |

I like the soft tones in this and I'd really like to know how this effect was achieved. Do you do wit with a lens on the camera or with some sort of photoshop post processing. I can make images look like this in PS, but all the ways I can do it well are illegal, so I can never submit anything. Let me know if you can. Oh, and don't worry, I'm not going to request a DQ or anything. I'm not one of those people :) |
