I think you need a bit of fill flash here -- he's too dark, IMO. Other than losing a bit of hair to the background, I don't have any problems with it.

The background isn't bad as you suggest, I think a shallower depth of field to blur the background would help a little more. Also the lighting between the subject and background are fairly similar causing them to blend together a little. I'm sure some of the portrait DPC'ers could be more insightful. All in all pretty good first efforts at portraits.
