This challenge has been one roller coaster of a ride.

My friend Mike (Grain Challenge) helped me setup and practice for this shot after my motorized strobe failed.

Thanks to my friend Kelly for being so patient in helping me out for this shoot. You might recognize her from my Conspiracy Challenge entry. We took about 30 shots (over 1.5 hours) for this challenge and since I did it last minute, I had to allow myself at least 15 minutes for PP.

This was a 20 second exposure. For those who were asking how this was shot, it's pretty simple.

Compose and meter shot with lights on. Set to Manual with a 20 second exposure. Kelly stood 5' in front of a black background. Set camera on self timer. Turn lights off. Shutter opens. Flash a strobe for her first pose (center). In darkness she moves to her next position. Wait 6 seconds. Flash a strobe the second time (her right). In darkness again, she moves to her final spot. Wait another 6 seconds. Flash a strobe for the very last time. Finally 2 seconds in total darkness.

If I had the time, I would have tried to compose it better having her arms lower. However, since my motorized strobe failed miserably, I had to settle for this old photographic trick.

Here were some outtakes from the challenge.

This is still an awesome shot by far. It was refreshing to see this type of image along with a couple of others similar to this instead of the regular "DPC type" images. After reading your setup, kudos to you for trying and having the patience (and your model) to setup this shot. Thanks for the lesson as well. I need to learn this trick. I would have pegged this image in the top 10 and not in the third tier as you find yourself right now. Chin up! This is a great image that is sure to grace your profile page for the next few months. You have a wonderful portfolio of images and I'm sure it wouldn't take long before you finally get that coveted ribbon.

That's too funny, two independent minds thinking of practically the same thing for a challenge. I'm pretty sure I know who you are, cause you left me a comment about mine on the other challenge (Busy), so yes, let's compare notes after the challenge is over. Great idea and execution, and oh, your model is prettier than mine. LOL

Oh this is fun! Too bad the hands missed in the shot. Would make a great image if you can reshoot. Fun and would love to know the secret behind this shot!

A very tough shot to pull off and aside from the hands and the direction of the eyes on the left girl, you did a great job.

great control of shutter speed on this one. balance seems right although too bad for the higher arms. the lighting and WB is spot on and very natural.

Wonderful! My pick for a ribbon. Can;t find too much wrong with it, and given the basic editing rules it is great.

Funny and great shot! But how can this be a play in shutter speeds? More like an exposure exercise.

Effect would've been better if the mid-subject had lowered her arms 6-8 inches. Clever.
