Photograph Information Photographer's Comments
Challenge: Shutter Speed (Basic Editing III)
Camera: Fujifilm FinePix S5100
Location: my shop in Upsala, Ontario
Date: Nov 1, 2005
Aperture: F/4.9
ISO: 64
Shutter: 1 sec.
Galleries: Action
Date Uploaded: Nov 1, 2005

This is another self-portrait, showing me at work in my shop. I realize that it would have been better to shoot from a different position, to get the forge in a better place in the photo, but my shop is so small that I really didn't have anywhere else to set up my tripod. (I was a little wary of getting too close to the action, as I didn't really want to get any of that hot, flying scale on my camera!)

I took probably around 40 shots (setting the camera for 10 second timer to allow me to get into position), trying different shutter speeds, as well as lighting changes. It also took a little practice to get synchronized with the camera so that I could capture the hot scale & have myself in a good pose.

In Paint Shop Pro 8, I did a histogram contrast adjustment, a touch of saturation adjustment, crop, add borders, resize, unsharp mask, compress & save.

I really like this picture, maybe because I've always wanted to be a blacksmith.

The black border hurts this picture. It actually takes a moment to realize that, at the right, you're looking at a border, and not at some strange impedement to that side of the frame. Also, the picture is way too under-exposed for my tase; you might have tried an even slower shutter speed, a wider aperture, a faster film, or some combination.

This would be a much better photograph if you had the flash on rear curtain sync. Maybe you did? I just want to see his head moving forward not backward

Cool idea but I think it needs more refining
