Why so much futzing? I created a custom white balance and then forgot to turn it on when I was shooting.
So the above isn't correct since I went back and re-shot. I really wanted the composition "just so" and that gave me the opportunity to set the camera to the custom white balance. I also changed the lighting around a bit and dimmed the shadowing with reflectors.
Post Process:
Set white and grey points (as above).
Crop.
Twiddle levels again 31/2.00/255 and output 40/255.
Hue/Saturation on:
Magenta 101/0/49
Blues (expanded) 0/0/53
Reds 0/21/0

This is what I wanted from the start. There are a few stray threads and shadows I'd fix if I could spot edit...but I'm rather happy with the result.
The Story: I love the ocean! But growing up inland I never really knew what it was--the coast of Maine was what I imagined most ocean to be. Sandy beaches with sometimes unbroken shells are incredible to me....as they must have been for my grandmother. She was about 14 when her family went to Florida during the depression as so many did...the title is for her.

great lines and textures. I like the gradation in the background - it adds a subtlety that wouldn't be there if it were pure white. And the title is good as well :)
