Greetings from the Critique Club...

Hi Phinbob...

I think you are quite lucky. There are great blue herons in my area but they are all so incredibly skiddish that it's nearly impossible to get close enough to get good photos. I have tried on multiple occasions myself with no luck. I consider myself lucky if I can get within 50 yards of one. They are gorgeous creatures... graceful... serene... not to mention, delicate :)

I think you have a good capture here. I'm not very fond of the light/time of day condition for the photo, but it's still a good shot. Let's talk about your title for a moment.

"Great Blue Heron, Delicate Desert Habitat."

What's delicate here? The Heron or the Habitat? This particular title choice creates some internal conflict I think. Another conflict that could arise from this title is that this particular desert is standing in water :) I know that there are lots of desert oasis areas, but the theme of desert generally conjures up notions of sandy arid land... Don't you think?

This is just some food for thought. Sometimes titles play a more important role in an image than you may realize :)

Keep up the good work...

John Setzler

This photo was taken in Tucson, AZ. In case you do not know where Tucson is, it is in the middle of the Sonoran Desert. I stand by the title.

I would love to know what lens you used to get this shot?
I took the same photo of the great blue heron and did not get the detail that you did on this shot. This is beautiful 10

This is very cool. Why is the water that color? It gives the bird a very nice glow.

What a great shot! We have quite a few of these guys in KS but I always seem to get them next to a lake or in the rain or next to something else that is of such a similar color that bird ends up drab. Very nice.

Well composed and shot. Muddy water's a distraction (color takes away from the contrast but I have no suggestions... Maybe try B&W) Nice and sharp.

Beautiful bird and photo, but the plants in the background seem a little overpowering, which distracts from the bird.

This is a beautiful shot but I think it falls victim to too much DOF. The tall reeds in the background drown out the Heron in the foreground. Still a beautiful shot.

what a great pic - I think it would look better if the tall grass blades in the background were a little softer than the subject/heron - good job though :)

This image has very striking colors. I think it is somewhat oversharpened and could be cropped more tightly.
