this shot looked a lot better with the use of selection tools to leave some yellow on the leaf(gray now) and hide the various reds in the background that couldnt be desaturated and stay legit.

no cropping, a little curves, and a lot of hue/sat.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

This is a wonderful image and the fact that you didn't have to crop shows an insight into overall composition and feel for your shot. You saw the vision and shot it.

But why then did it end up with just an average score is your next question. I know I would ask that too. I have no idea what the colored version looks like but I'm thinking part of the process was something you said in your notes. The lack of the yellow on the leaves hurts the shot. The reddish/orange is very nice but the gray on the leaf looks a bit unnatural. The selective desaturation in a basic challenge is difficult when you are limited to what you can do and the way the red spots pop up all over the shot are a bit distracting in the end. I would really love to see the colorized version just to see the difference. Maybe offer it up to the forums and see what other's can do with this. Now that you're not restricted by the challenge limits if you decide to rework this with the yellows in I would love to see it again. Perhaps if the just the front leaf and the one right behind it were left with their color?

But again, great overall shot, lovely composition, well done.

Hope my comments help and good luck in future challenges

winderful use of short DOF, great comp, great textures, great bokeh. seems technically great, but it still leaves me a little flat I guess.

I really like the image. This sounds like a daft comment but I think the long title detracts from the image. Perhaps simply 'weathered'?
