Between the street "De Munt" (The Mint) en the "Pakhuisstraat" (Warehousestreet) is an old canal. This drawbridge joins the two streets. On both sides you will find 17th and 18th century buildings.
When you stand on the "Onder de Boompjes" (Beneath the Trees) or the "Buurtje" (Neighbourhood) street there is this reflection in the water during a limited time. The sun has to be just right to get the right amount of contrast in the water. this time lasts 15 to thirty minutes. Because it varies with the angle of the sun it is different during every day of the year.
Perhaps some of you recognize the scene/idea from my "Turfhaven Reflection" photo that is in my portfolio (currently hidden). I found out about this while I was waiting for my barber early on a saturday morning in July (or thereabout) and tried some stupid stuff with my new lens.
When you stand there photgraphing the uninteresting water in the canal people look at you as if you are insane. It doesn't look like this in the water, it becomes magic on the CCD and looks great on the LCD.

When you miss the right time the contrast is either to flat or to harsh. It is very hard to correct for.
I shot on and on and on. Until I had this one with some reflection clues, people, a bird to ripple the water and good contrast. This is uncropped. Hope you like it.

Very nice, but I think no one saw the bird swimming in the water, it's just too small for people to notice when voting. Maar goed gedaan!

I Like it but I cant help wondering what it would have looked like with a bit more of the reflected half visible and the other way up. The fact that it is the reflection is probably responsible for the muted colors and almost smokey look to part of it.

I can definitely tell that this is a reflected image. I like the subject, including the person on the bridge. IMO, cropping out the lamp and sign may have improved the composition by shifting the focus more to a "thirds" line while putting more emphasis on the ripples at the same time. Did you use a polarized filter on your lens at all? The upper right corner is very dark and has a "Polarized lens" look to me, which I find distracting. Some additional brightening with curves or levels may also have brought out the colours more.

Love the tone especially, of course it should have done better but I sincerely wouldn't have hoped from DPC to understand a perfectly well street shot. Beautiful scene you captured here, the people passing on the bridge just adds a lot to it. I would have prefered to see a little bit more action on the surface of the water (leaves, maybe the duck in a more noticeable space). Actually if you really pay attention to the duck and the waves behind it it just has a real surreal feel, like there's something just mistical about it. The waves add a lot to it. I don't know, this just makes me feel very european like, and kind of romantic I guess. The setting just calls that.

i like how the reflection is the only thing in the image. it makes for an interesting, slightly distorted reality. cool pic.

wow, that's pretty cool. Awsome reflection. If it wern't for the ripples I wouldn't have even known it was a reflection.
