Like the Pond photo...adding some space on the right gives the picture some flow by giving the cigar a place to explode into. an even crop around the outside contains the dynamics of the shot.
the whole idea behind the rule of thirds is to address the viewers natural line of sight. when we first view an image our gaze tends to go to the four intersections of a tic-tac-toe board if you were to draw one over the image. by putting the focal point of the image on one of those intersections, you immediately draw the eye to the impact part of the image - which in this case is your face and the cigar. |

Funny photo. I'd be curious to read how many takes it took to get this. Reminds me more of a practical joke than what your title indicates. 6 |

funny, the expression is not quite right though, but I'll give you a 9 for the humour. |

Nice "action" shot. IMO this is a "party atmosphere" shot where his buddies would be laughing and his eyes would be shut due to fear. It think in a case like this there should be other elements to tell the story. Also: It looks like the paper is on wire which has been cloned out ! --- clarity/contrast/color: 1/2
composition,POV,DOF:1/2
effort+originality: 2/2
theme appropriate: 1/2
aesthetic timelessness+emotion: 1/2 |

The lighting is really good and shows the subject off really well. The best part - the expression and action going on it this shot. One cannot help but to smile and the bugged eye surprise on the man's face and the exploding cigar. |
