Complementary colours are pairs of colours that contrast strongly when compared to each other.
The red-tipped yellow petals would require a blue-violet background to demonstrate complementary colours. Your image demonstrates a duotone effect rather than the effect of complementary colours.
Check some of the forum discussions on complementary colours for suggestions on using colour for contrast.

| It might be almost brown, but its yellow and red, or yellow and orange, or yellow and pink...and out of focus. |

| Colors don't really meet the challenge and it looks like either your focus is off or the depth of focus is too shallow. |

| My eye is immediately drawn to the the center of the flower, but the focus seems to be closer. I would have added a bit more depth of field to try and get it all in focus. I like the vivid color on the dry, brown dirt. |

| I might like this better if the center of the flower were more in focus (and that is difficult if you are using a point and shoot). |

| For me, this falls a little short as far as complementary colors (as I understand them). I like the composition and angle. |

| I would love for this to be on a solid black background and in tack sharp focus, as the blossom has the complementary colors and is very striking. |
