just a peachy portulaca on the brown ground

Complementary colours are pairs of colours that contrast strongly when compared to each other.
The red-tipped yellow petals would require a blue-violet background to demonstrate complementary colours. Your image demonstrates a duotone effect rather than the effect of complementary colours.

Check some of the forum discussions on complementary colours for suggestions on using colour for contrast.

It might be almost brown, but its yellow and red, or yellow and orange, or yellow and pink...and out of focus.

Colors don't really meet the challenge and it looks like either your focus is off or the depth of focus is too shallow.

My eye is immediately drawn to the the center of the flower, but the focus seems to be closer. I would have added a bit more depth of field to try and get it all in focus. I like the vivid color on the dry, brown dirt.

I might like this better if the center of the flower were more in focus (and that is difficult if you are using a point and shoot).

For me, this falls a little short as far as complementary colors (as I understand them). I like the composition and angle.

I don't see 2 complementary colours.

There are no complementary colors.

The flower could do to be a little more sharp, but also does not quite meet the challenge

I would love for this to be on a solid black background and in tack sharp focus, as the blossom has the complementary colors and is very striking.
