I was going to enter either this or the color version of this in the Branches challenge, but in my indecision I completely spaced the challenge and didn't get one entered in time. :-(

Once I reached for cobalt heavens.
Stretching upwards to the sky.

I drank the rain and shrugged the wind,
and sheltered birds too weak to fly.

When heavy snow would take a branch,
two more I’d grow, to fill it’s place.

I shed my foliage every Fall,
and started fresh with Spring’s embrace.

The years have passed with rings to tell.
My sap of life has since run dry.

My branches, reaching for the heavens,
no longer wave to the cobalt sky.

you've got a wonderful image here. The shape of the tree creates interest, then the lines lead you straight up the tree with the lightest tones on the trunk directing the eye. You've been able to take the tones from white to black and create a strong image besides. I'm impressed.
