 I took this picture in my house, using the kit lens on a tripod (cheap slik tripod). For lighting I used SB-800 and I filtered the light via a blue pice of paper. I connected my camera to my laptop and used nikon capture to operate the camera.
I used this plastic pumpkin that I had because of it's orange color. To use a complementary color - I used blue background light.

Orange and blue. Nice perspective and composition. Would look even cetter with a light in the pumpkin to make it glow.

I think a real pumpkin (carved or not) against a blue backgound would have been more interesting.
