A candid portrait, it may lose big to the studio portraits... very little retouching, just a bit of contrast adjustment

After the voting... thanks for all the votes... this is a sweet lady. It was the first time I had seen her in four months. I gave her a hug, stepped back, and snapped the shot, with no intention of using it for this challenge. Her eyes were soft because they were a little teary:)

Very respectable score, but how more people didn't see the quality in this shot is beyond me. Perfect exposure, wonderful contrast and tons of character. Top 3 in my opinion, keep up the good work!

I really like this. Such expressive eyes. I love how you can see the life she's lived right on her face. The blouse is a great color as well.

Beautiful. A wonderful subject captured with simplicity and dignity. You make it impossible for the viewer to avoid an emotional collision with this appealing, engaging person. And that's what makes it such a terrific protrait. 9

Wow! I think this is a really great portrait. I find photos of the elderly so rich and wonderful. I hope you do well in the challenge (and beat out some of the younger model shots)! 10

The contrast with the very dark background works well but takes a little of the texture of the hair, glad you didn´t soften or sharpen this image too much, well done, I like it alot..

This is remarkable and touching..I like this portrait a lot. It is a depiction of the struggles of living, as evidenced by her lined face..

The wisdom and character shine in her eyes. There's a hardness about her that gives me the impression she has worked all her life but there is also a look of acceptance. Very captivating image!

the eyes seem just a bit soft, this might knock it out of the top spot, but this ought to do very well, I like the way the slight tilt to her head is ballanced by the slightly greater space you left on the left side. Deftly handled.
