The thing is - it doesn't look like a human normally looks. It has higher contrast by FAR than the normal human face. It's not "wow, this only has black and or white in it" but "wow, the difference between a face and hair aren't usually that drastic."
At least that's what I was going for. :)

The S curve sometimes has little to do with percieved contrast. I see no areas of sharp contrast. Areas of the face appear blowed out, but are tempered by the intermediate surrounding hair. In turn the hair graduates and seems in stark contrast to no conecting areas of the image. |

For me, not enough contrast - many areas very similar in tonal values. |
