Another pet shot...for the record, I have no pets, and I'm allergic to cats, so I did do scouting around for a kitten, I brought all my gear over, and I had to make the kitten stay still for a second...all in between terrible sneezes :)

After today, I can't say shooting pets is any easier than other better scoring subjects :)

Critique Club,

First impression, the shot looked a little too soft. On a closer look I think you have carried it off quite well. I like the texture in the fur just to the right on the body, but it looks like it came at the expense of the side of the nose and the neck.

I like the composition and think that the ears just out of frame works quite well. Nice contrast from the light side to the shadow on the face. It makes a nice duotone, the texture in the fur really stands out.

Technically, I think you loose a little on this due to two things. Firstly, it's just marginally too soft for my liking.... and secondly the blowout in the whites, might have been better to either increase the light overall or reduce it overall, if that makes sense. A little more light in the shadow areas would have given you the chance to avoid the overexposure on the neck.

Overall though I think it is a really nice image, it's not super captivating, but it has those soft, sweet qualities that a picture of a kitten should have.

Thanks for sharing and keep shooting.

Todd.

very nice portrait. I like the softness of the picture and the very intelligent look on the cats face.

The white in this photo is quite blown out, Softer lighting, possibly natural lihgt might have been nice. I also think that the kitten is a little on the blurry side, or maybe you used a softening filter? Try working on your lighting a bit...

Very cute kitten. I actually like the soft focus. The lighting are colors are nice. Gives it a serene look. However, I do wish that the ears hadn't been cut off.

It appears out of focus.

I like the soft look to this photo. Diffusion filter? If so, what one... I must know as I'm in the market for one that does this. My softness in my photos comes from PS (not challenge photos of course). The cat is average cute. It has a peculiar look to it but I can't tell you why exactly. The framing is too tight where my mind says "big" to the cat without knowing its size exactly. generally "big" and "cute" are hard to find in the same sentence. I'd have preferred to see it much smaller in the frame. \"small\" and \"cute\" are a little more apt to be uttered in the same breath. Just feeling long-winded today.....

I think this is a little too soft. Soft focus is great for humans in that it hides wrinkles and imperfectons but the nice thing about cats is the great texture in the fur. I think thi is missing here. Just my opinion..

alot of cat photos are usually similar, but the softness of this one makes it unique from the start.. but whats more, is that the cat really looks to have a personality.. The highlights are a bit blown out though, making some rather obvious flat white areas..

Soft focus is interesting, but at odds with the dramatic high-contrast lighting

Very cute and your use of a soft focus gives the kitty a very dreamy quality.8

Image looks quite soft. You did a good job metering all that white though. It looks like only one small area has blown highlights.

Did OSS finally get her kitten in? (C: Lighting is good, except the one harsh area on the chest and nose. Not sure if I like the soft focus....just a bit too soft for my taste, still a very decent shot

Nice white to black color range. I'm not sure I like the blur effect you used. A sharp image for this one might have been better.
