Challenge: What is the Matrix? (Classic Editing)
Camera: Canon EOS-D60
Location: Studio, Lancaster CA.
Date: May 19, 2003
Aperture: f/9.5
ISO: 400
Shutter: 1/3
Galleries: Abstract, Studio
Date Uploaded: May 19, 2003

Deep Thoughts:
Inspired partially by the technological possibilities portrayed in the Matrix played a large part in this shot but shooting something directly related to the film, seemed to go exactly against the philosophy behind the story. "A place without rules and controls, borders or boundaries" is what my interpretation of the Matrix came down to. "Free your mind".

Tech notes:
Trying to find an x-ray image of a hand on the internet to download into and display within my palm pilot for this shot was the tricky part.

Hue/Saturation chanels and curves were modified to achieve the final result.

Shot with Sigma 28-70 2.8 EX DF lens @51mm.

Mike Malloy

Terrific!

Great shot Mike. Congrats. The clarity of your work is second to none. I've gotta say, you are one of my favorite photographers here and Valor in particular is one of the best shots I've seen here. Is there a tutorial for that shot?
05/28/2003 03:47:47 AM
Nice trick, nice photo, nice scoring - and you didn't get a single '1' (which is really rare). Two 3rd's, one 2nd - what's next - another 2nd or are you going straight for the top?
05/28/2003 03:29:30 AM
Good job very well executed and well deserved. Jacko :)

Very cool, like the desaturation of the rest of the colors. Excellent lighting and focus. 8
05/27/2003 04:43:18 PM
Should be a top 3 finish for this. Excellent work. 10
05/27/2003 06:55:10 AM
good job
05/26/2003 04:51:15 PM
I could copy this if I had one of those hand-held computers...
05/26/2003 07:58:14 AM
Wow... Now how did you get the xray? hehehe I like the idea behind this :)
05/25/2003 06:13:58 PM
Creative idea. Don't understand the Red Note since i pretty much figured out how you did this. Nice shot, good composition, good choice of B&W., you lost it a bit though on the hand to the right of the handheld. Are you that whacky guy from Ottawa by any chance? :) 7

Brilliant photo. Top 3
05/23/2003 02:31:07 PM
cool
05/23/2003 12:39:13 PM
Very nice. Creative. As I'm sure you've been told, the hand looks larger than the actuall boes in the screen, but who cares right? I don't. - 10
05/23/2003 04:24:29 AM
Very creative.! Great effect. Very memorable. Good luck. Jacko. 10
05/23/2003 01:42:50 AM

05/22/2003 02:22:30 PM
exceptional!
05/22/2003 01:53:41 PM
I don't know how you did it, but what a great photograph! Definitly has a spooky feeling - good job
05/22/2003 05:05:29 AM
maybe you should've loaded a photo of binaries or codes to "represent" your fingers on your PDA, it would make the photo more "matrix" instead of saying "xray"
05/22/2003 02:29:01 AM
The most original photo in the challenge and my personal favourite, fantastic - 10.
05/21/2003 04:40:07 PM
LOL, somebody thought this was illegal? The only thing is the xray fingers aren't positioned right (too far into the palm area). Very cool and creative anyway!
05/21/2003 03:32:27 PM
Thats great. Really really good. Im curious as to how you did that. 10.
05/21/2003 10:28:11 AM
Perfect, topical, slick (although... 'slick' may be an attribute befitting 'the other side').

The duotone works wonderfully well.
05/21/2003 09:46:09 AM
Exellent idea, shot.........love it.
05/21/2003 07:05:53 AM
awesome. I absolutely love this - DPPrints for sure. I think I've given 4 10s out of about 1500 votes up until now. make it 5. Brilliant idea (I don't care if you didn't make it up yourself, it's still cool), and nice execution. 10.
05/21/2003 06:34:07 AM
I really like this! It's clever, creative, the use of color within the b&w really makes it stand out. Even the bones are lined up with the fingers! It's certainly futuristic and an original idea for the challenge. I dont really see any negative points. Well done!
05/21/2003 05:11:53 AM
Very clever shot. Not a direct reference to the film, which is nice, too. Lovely contrast of colour/no colour - very good indeed. 9.
05/21/2003 04:10:58 AM
Nice. More star trek than matrix ?
05/21/2003 03:32:51 AM
Original idea, well done.
I'm not sure to understand the connection to the theme.
Love it anyway
05/21/2003 01:48:26 AM
Clever! Might have worked marginally better ifyou got green instead of blue to show up.
05/21/2003 12:21:09 AM
nice idea & composition =8
05/20/2003 11:11:20 PM
excellent idea... Snoy Clié is a dangerous device ? 9
05/20/2003 10:42:23 PM
Creative idea of showing the X-Ray mode of finger !! 6
05/20/2003 10:35:45 PM
That's a great idea
05/20/2003 09:29:47 PM
This is awesome. Use of color vs. b&w is done beautifully, and I love the crispness of the overall image. Nice work!
05/20/2003 08:37:15 PM
great lighting and tones and cool effect with the XRays. Good product palcement too! :)
05/20/2003 08:31:13 PM
