This is a nice pic that looks like it was widely misunderstood. I think the red was too far from blood. Obviously, you couldn't go too dark, or people would think it was just ATF.

This is really well thought out obviously. The only thing I would change is to put top gun underneath Saving Ryan's Privates and crop IN.

It's not really amazing as it only took 30 seconds to do, but it might give you an idea...

Hmmm... I don't get it. I think your trying to make a political statement? Anyways, this is a little cluttered. I don't think you need all the elements that you've included to make your statement. It's kinda like speaking. Get your point across with as few words as possible! Also, your lighting makes this look very flat and your focus appears to be off...

Quite a bit of a stretch ot meet the challenge IMHO.

Great image with the hard hitting political message, perfect for this challenge. I love images that convey a message and can evoke emotion. well done, big bump up.

The idea with the red paint from the oil can is interesting and the inclusion of the newspapers help contect the shot, however I would like to see a slightly simpler image with less clutter.

I feel this would provide greater impact

I don't really get it. The red color is meant to represent blood I guess, and you are trying to show the similarity and yet difference between real war (as an entertainment?) and fake war in movies.
I don't find the red color on the DVD cover to be that effective and what is the purpose of the pen and the knife? (Are you perhaps referring to the saying that the pen is mightier than the sword?)
Anyway, I don't find this to be an effective enough picture. It's neither obvious enough or subtle enough in my opinion.

I don't like seeing the holster for the knife and you should have kept the background further back in order to make less light fall on it so it would be darker and one wouldn't see the folding in it.

more of a political statement than an illusion, lightning and focus could be a little sharper

Your take on this illusion challenge is far different from what everyone else I believe expects. From a political standpoint, this is a good image. But from this challenge, I believe it doesn't quite meet it :(

Excellent commentary on humanity with a simple image..well done and very well composed.

im not exactly sure what you mean by this, Yes media is an illusion iv been there and there is alotof good stuff hapening other then war, so hopefully im taking this picture right,
08/09/2005 07:31:58 AM
yikes, super political. only problem is i dont know where to look at in this shot. im drawn to the blood because of the trianglular pointing with the knife pen and oil. but im not sure if thats where i'm supposed to be going.

I guess if you are referring to the fact that the mainstream media only reports the negative things that are going on, it is an illusion. As far as the challenge relevance - I don't see it. "Set up an illusion to trick your viewers"
If the topic was "Political Rantings" then I would critique the photo more in depth. :)

...returning to add comments about the photo itself: Overall composition is a bit chaotic and the focus sems to be off a touch and the background curtains could be darker. All my opinion of course - take it for what its worth and hope you had fun with it. :)

Not sure I get the illusion here, although I'm sure it must have something to do with the abstract (i.e., media, war, entertainment, etc.). Sorry that I don't get it, but it is a well executed shot. Good DOF, detail and colors.

the blood needed to be a little thiner - ketchup might have worked better.

I hate political commentary in the contests......

I hope you did'nt ruin your movie for this

Good color, good detail, not sure what the transmission fluid is there for though.

Interesting take on the challenge...has meaning. I'm not sure I understand why you have the bottle in the picture. Technical wise, i think this picture could use a little boost in contrast. I don't know how well it would have been received by other voters, but I think it would have been cool to desaturate all the colors except for the red of the "blood". Would have made it more dramatic, I think.

Good point there!
08/08/2005 09:42:07 AM
First Impression: A different bacdrop than the clinical creased black cloth might have helped. I think the picture should have said "war as entertainment" instead of the text for better dpc score.
Was I fooleded? I get it.

took a while but I think I get your intention...not sure about the red oil though...
