Shot at Wildlife Prairie Park near Peoria, IL.

Used Teffen 2x teleconverter, which is part of the reason it's a bit soft

100% crop, levels adjust, slight curves adjust to ease the hilight on the back of his neck, USM (50, 15, 0), select crane add slight USM (.8, 80, 5), invert selection, add slight gaussian blur (radius 1) to background.

I think this particular shot suffers from the 100% crop. Not saying that your camera can't do this type of shot justice, just saying that I'm not sure this was the best example of its capabilities. It seems a bit noisy to me and while I love bird shots and the composition is very good, the detail just isn't there. I think you could also bump up the color sat a hair. It's a beautiful bird - I wish I could see the uncropped shot.

The subject is interesting and attractive. The lighting does a great job describing to the viewer the shape of the crane. Unfortunately, most of us are used to wildlife shots of birds that more completely blur the background. Fortunately this background is full of fine-textured things, but somehow enough of that texture is evident to distract one's attentions from the subject. Finally I find the cranberry splotch on the crane clashes a tiny bit with the yellowish green of the background and find myself wondering whether a touch of selective desaturation would not fix this problem.

This shot seems a bit out of focus, i like the composition, the shape of the birds neck really add to the shot, good capture.
