I stumbled onto this photo by accident today and I decided to give it another look. I actually remember voting for this photo fifteen months ago. I remember the face, the smile, and the black chain running in front of the face. I remember being charmed by that smile and being bothered by that chain. I see that I rated it a seven back then, when I almost never gave photos higher ratings. But I see now that I underestimated this shot. I think that has happened a lot.
Not only is there a chain running through the shot, there is a chain motif running through the shot. Emilie's smiling eyes bring a spirit to the photo that somehow transcends chains, overthrows them, not with violence but with charm and spirit. Really, this is an artful shot. Bravo. |

I really like the empty swing in the background. One of the distracting elements of the background is hoe it goes from the shadow of the tree into the bright sunlight. To really emphasize the aloneness I think I would have had her not smile, but have her looked a little more depressed. The chain in front of her face really gives an isolated and caged feeling along with the empty swing.
One of the lighting problems I see is you lose all detail in her left eye and her hair, her right shoulder is a little bright. My two suggestions for the shadow for her face is either get rid of it or what I would do is use it. Cover her eye with her hair and have her look down to give a gloomy feeling to the photo.
With it being b&w it coveys more of a depressing feeling. The blacks in this photo are supper rich, but the whites suffer here.
So to conclude I want to say she has a really great smile but it doesn̢۪t work with the shot. I think going for an isolated feel here would work better. Or if you rotated the angle so she isn̢۪t stuck behind the chain. I like you taking a chance here sometimes it works and sometime it doesn̢۪t.

Good job on this, Joey. She's very cute - see what you can do for her with the new Minolta. |

Her bright smile at the camera seems to suggest she is happy to have company. |

i don't understand the title, but like the photo, especially the chain in front of her face. the lighting is nice, and the contrast as well. |

This is interesting. You're going to get some "pity about the chain" comments, I guess. But of course it is the presence & placement of that chain (especially in relation to the eye) that lifts this image from the merely good to the excellent. If you also receive any "pity about the bit of stuff stuck in her hair" comments, don't scream ... smile. 7 |

Really nice shot with great contrast and stuff, but the chain over the face spoils it I think. 8 |

What an amazing black and white photo! The contrast and depth of field are amazing, the composition well balanced (the extra swing works great), and I love how the eye peeks out from the chain link! I honestly can't think of anything to do different...
Well done and great message! |

Most ot the time one takes exception black chains running right through the middle of a subject's face, yet in this case the daring move makes the photo - possibly by drawing our attention to the expressive eye and mouth. This is a powerfully beautiful photo. I do really wish the two trees in the background somehow were not there - they really distract from that great black head of hair. |

I really like this shot..I have a picky note that you may think is just stupid, but I wish she was ever so slightly leaning her head back so as to be peeking more around the chain...nonetheless a great moment. |

Kind of an urban candid shot. I'd bring up the contrast a bit more. It would've been ice to have some light source on her face to highlight her features. The chain in front of her face distracts a bit for me. I hope this is helpful. |

This is a very nice capture. With regard to composition, I wish that the chain was not crossing her face. Interesting subject, black and white was a good choice. |
