This is a cemetery several miles from our house. It is overgrown and despite one woman's effort to keep it up, it has fallen on disrepair and some of the headstones are broken or fallen over. This one stood out amidst the others of his family. I played with filters and lighting effects to create this nightime/spotlight shot.

Excellent somber feel to this image reminds me of an old cowboy movie, well done.

great picture. I like the tones which give the image an almost eerie atmosphere (PS thank you for comment on my picture Jim)

I didn't enter or vote on the family challenge, but I think that this is a really fine shot. I like the moody and dark feeling...seems to fit the subject very well.

Judy what a great image. I love the softness ans quiet feel of this one. I agree, one of the best gravesite shots that I have seen in a while. Shows a great deal of respect.

I loved this photo Judy! I think the moodiness fit the picture beautifully. I almost wish it were a cemetery challenge because I think it would have ribboned in that challenge! I think you did a great job!!!

Thanks to everyone who got this photo. The complaints were mostly about things I did intentionally but I was quite pleased with it, so that's all that matters, right??? I knew it was risky being so dark and moody, but I hope it created a mood for at least part of you, which was my intent.

This looks underexposed and unevenly lit. The framing of the headstone feels uncomfortable. I think that you'd be better off centering the image, or placing it about a third of the way from the edge; some additional breathing room above the tombstone would be nice too. Rendering this in B&W was a good choice, but the low contrast muddies the textures (which look like they might have otherwise been a strong compositional element). Adding some noise would have given this image a more nostalgic feel, which I think would have reinforced the mood.

What a wonderful feeling this photo generates! A very Victorian flavor, imho. It may be my favorite of the contest so far!

Has to be explaned by the title. imho the image have to be able to stand for the subject bye itself without any explanation. Also the image dont excite me visually.

I think a closer crop on the bottom and left side would strengthen this image quite a bit

great moody shot ... to me a little too much darkness along the bottom especially bottom left ...

ya need at least two graves for a family.

Okay, ya got me, I won't change the score, that was based on the shot, but, yes family can be one. I was looking at the old grave, and thinking family plot (all of my ancesters graves I have visited are family plots back to 1810s. Yes families visit or try to find graves of family. So it fits better now.

I will not mark a great effort like this down, to me it is just one of the most beautiful shots of such a somber topic.

This image is very dark. It gives the shot a moody feel, but robs sharpness.

Nice shadowing and interpretation of the challenge. Excellent work!

This is one of the best grave pictures I've ever seen. I like the simple, uncluttered look that a lot of cemetery pictures don't have. I love your use of tones and texture. 10

bit too dark and lonely for a "family" challenge
