good choice of subject but the strong shadows makes the lighting look too harsh. bouncing the light off a piece of white posterboard can soften the shadows and balance the light.

Light is a bit harsh. A different background and maybe a different composition would have enhanced this photo.

another chaoltic composition - where am I supposed to look? What is it that you wanted me to notice in particular? Besides that your camera can focus close up?

That's different! Maybe a different light might have improved it: warmer tones, no sharp shadows, backlight to get some transparency effect...

Nice idea . I think a darker background would have made the kernels pop out better (no pun intended)
