I liked this pne pretty well, gave it a 6, I thought it would have been better with just a tad more DOF, to get a little more of the head in focus. Also a more solid background would have probably helped a bit.

I love to take photos at odd angles, so I can appreciate your composition here. However, it seems that you're wanting the eye of the knight to be what you see first (I say that because it's the part in clearest focus), something which is difficult at that angle with this knight. First, most people will look slightly to the left and slightly above the center of your photo. Therefore, that is a good place to put the focal point of your subject - people decide very quickly whether they like or dislike a photo, and the very first impression is the most important. You have to catch their eye before they'll look at the rest of the photo at all. I would try taking the photo again and try putting the knight on the left rather than the right.

Second, to be honest, it's not the most attractive-looking chess piece I've ever seen. You could retake this picture - same lighting, same background, same focus - but with a knight from a completely different set, and the whole mood of the photo would change.

Like I said, I love odd angles, especially of common items that most people wouldn't give a second glance at. Just keep experimenting with different angles, different focus points, different pieces, etc. It's all in having fun with it.

I hope this helps! If you retake the shot, I'd love to see the results. Just PM me and let me know. :o)

Well, you asked for feedback... I can't add much that hasn't been said... this looks like a potentially promising subject but somehow your picture just doesn't work. It certainly is a Macro, but I understand the 5's middle of the road voting.

3 is too low for this entry (IMO) as it is in focus and meets the challenge... bonus points because it is not a shot of a bug! :-)

So what is wrong:

Awkward angle
Cropping too tight
background distracts.. (what's wrong with a chess board?)

It is just not interesting enough to jump a vote or two... I think that technique is pretty sound, and I like the dappled natural light.

it appears grainy, its a boring subject and there is lack of details on the chess piece. the cropping isnt fantastic and the background is distracting.

looks quite a bit like the arby's oven mitt character

I agree with many other commenters feedback regarding the background details - they are distracting - and the brown shadow on the knight seems like a shadow caused by another light source with something in the way. I think the DOF should extend lower as well. I like the gold tones at the base of the piece. The lighting/highlights on the lower portions of the knight also seem to be blown out. I like the angle of the shot and the feel of depth it gives, but the other technical aspects detract from the overall image. I also have to agree that the competition in the Macro V Challenge was exceptional tough, and since many voters score on a scale, your shot was probably penalized more than it might have been in another challenge.

Hope this helps. Just my 2 cents...

The perspective and composition is generally good. The yellow/orange color in the background adds visual interest to the image. It has low noise. General technical quality is decent.

Ironically, the incredible strength of the other images entered in this challenge may have had a slight negative impact on your score, but not lots.

It isn't so much that the DOF is super shallow but it is where it is centered that hurts. Almost always you want the eye to be center focused, even with a chess piece. Yours is center focused on the forehead. That is a fault.

The background, though dark, is still distracting because it has detail that makes the viewer wonder what is back there. Anything that detracts from the main subject should be eliminated from the composition. All elements in an image should always support the main subject.

The biggest distraction is the brownish shadow on the piece itself. Whether it is real or not, the browness and shape of it looks unnatural. The viewer really can't figure out what the heck it is. However, it is distinct from the nice black shadow on the right. The brown color is not appealing and it sorta looks like bad burning to most viewers.

wow, umm I have to agree with the harsh shadows. I don't want to rip this apart and I do like what you were going for but a general rule of thumb, in any sort of still life photo 9 times out of 10 blur is bad. If the whole piece was in a sharp focus and the background wasn't it would different. I hope that helps

Your aperture is listed at F/2.8, which is quite shallow and explains why the entire knight isn't in focus. Try somthing like F/8 and use a tripod/ better lighting so that there isn't any blur/shaking at the low shutter speed. Unless, of course, the shallow DOF was an artistic thought...

This is how I would of judged it. I didn't get to vote in this challenge:
Subject Impact: Low
The lack of focal range makes the subject seem noninteresting
Meets Challenge: Average
Because of it's abstract look. without title I would of found it hard to reconize the subject
Technical: Low
Harsh shadows and a very small area of focus. And the focal point does not explain the subject
Composition: Average
Composition would of been high if the technical aspect of the picture would of given us more detail. So I would have to give the composition an average rating
Creativity: Average
An avereage creative shot. You did try to take a macro/close up of something that is not seen in every challenge

Score: 4

Sorry if that sounds harsh but that how I see the picture. Hope it helps.

I like the crop, colors, lighting and DOF. I think two things held it back in the votong:
1. It's not an extreme macro, you have photos as close as a bugs eye in this challenge, it's hard to compare this to a photo of a bug's eye. I'm sure some people didn't even see it as a macro.
2. Without the title people might not be sure what it is. Maybe a slightly different angle?

I'm not real sure what about this photo deserved 1's and 2's. But I suppose to each his own and to each his own 1 to 10 scale. ;)

Thanks for all the comments!

good colors, lighting and choice of subject. i think i would prefer to see it from a slightly lower perspective, though.

If the subject was sharp it would help this pic tremendously.

bad subject

6 - Nice, but for me would be better with more 'fore focus' and although the base ads an 'element', the background is a little distracting.
